The Chicago Tribune had a front page story recently stating that 1 of 10 Iraqis are now refugees in another country.
That made me wonder what proportion of Mexicans are in the United States.
Mexico has a population of 108.7 million, according to the CIA’s World Factbook.
Newsbatch.com reports, “About 1/8 of the Mexican working population of working age is employed in the U.S.”
Wikipeida reports 6.8 million Mexican immigrants as of January 2006. (Unfortunately, I didn’t copy the link.)
If the numbers are correct and my division is, too, then 1 in 16 Mexicans are in the United States.
Would it be fair to call them refugees?
