Message of the Day – A Campaign Sticker

Former Kane County State’s Attorney David Akermann is running for judge.

In 2006, he ran for a judgeship in the Kane, Kendall and DeKalb County circuit. He won Kane, but lost DeKalb and Kendall, finishing second out of three.

He is now running for a subcircuit seat consisting of part of Elgin, Sleepy Hollow, the Dundees and part of Carpentersville. This is a Republican area.

Subcircuit districting was imposed upon Kane and McHenry Counties and, perhaps, others by the Democrats in order make it possible for Democrats to join the bench. Countywide elections allow pockets of the minority party to be overwhelmed by the majority party.

The idea first arose in Cook County in 1995. Then, with Republicans in control of the General Assembly and the governor’s office, the GOP joined with blacks to impose subcircuits on Cook County.

Akermann lost the 2000 primary election to Meg Gorecki. Gorecki got into all kinds of trouble for telling a friend that those wanting a county job should make a campaign contribution to the then-county board chairman. Everyone involved, including Gorecki eventually said this wasn’t true. Nevertheless, although the recorded phone call was made public, Gorecki, none-the-less won the primary.

Gorecki’s disciplining led to the column in a sister paper of the Northwest Herald which prompted Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert Thomas to successfully sue for libel.

I saw this sticker on political consultant Jon Zahm at State Senator Chris Lauzen’s Porky Picnic.
