Scheurer Blasts War Vote

Democratic candidate Randi Scheurer (IL-8TH Congressional District) blasted the Democratic Congress for voting on Wednesday to give the Bush administration another $50 billion for the Iraq war.

“While the Democratic Congress keeps playing political games with our soldiers’ and Iraqis’ lives, they keep funding the war,” says Scheurer. “That is the bottom line. Everything else is political theater.”

This is on top of the defense appropriations bill that Bush signed on Tuesday which allows him to shift billions of dollars from other Pentagon accounts to keep funding the war through mid-February.

“This bill is worse than the last two they passed (in May and July),” says Scheurer. “They keep lowering the bar on the so-called ‘withdrawal’ language, while the money keeps flowing for the war.”

All of the leading national peace groups vigorously opposed this legislation, except for the Progressive Democrats of America (PDA), whose local chapters endorse Scheurer’s Congressional bid.

“They’re strong allies and friends,” says Scheurer. “People can disagree and still be friends. I just don’t agree with PDA on supporting this type of political gamesmanship with other people’s lives.”

The incumbent Melissa Bean voted for this recent funding bill, as she has done on all the others.
