Gambling for Education

The most astounding thing I heard at the McHenry County College board meeting last Thursday night was the proposal to put a casino in Danville, the proceeds of which would help pay for community college buildings.

Immediately after the public comment period, Board President George Lowe told of missing the Saturdays morning session, which “turned out to be a real donnybrook.

“Danville is looking at a casino. That turned into a real donnybrook.”

“It was discussed at the President’s Council on Friday,” MCC President Walt Packard added.

“The proposal was from the mayor of Danville.

“If (approved)…revenue would be directed to the ICCB (Illinois Community College Board) for capital projects. That was the unique feature.

“It was hotly debated in the President’s Council as well.

“It’s probably not likely.”

My notes don’t say which of the two said they thought it “passed, but not by much.”

“Rots of Luck,” Lowe exclaimed.

“If it goes to the state, I don’t think the ICCB will see a penny of it.”

Colleges are based on the premise that if one works hard, one can succeed.

Casinos do not have the same premise.
