McHenry County Roads and the Role I Can No Longer Play

So far, I’ve not said, “I told you so,” concerning road improvements.

Or the lack thereof.

Maybe it’s time.

When I was state rep. in the 1990’s, I knew that roads were the most important thing to McHenry County residents.

I positioned myself so that I became the Republican spokesman on the House Appropriations Committee. That’s the one that handles the Illinois Department of Transportation’s budget.

Lots of contact with IDOT.

District engineers answered my phone calls. They didn’t tell their secretaries to take my number, that they’d call back.

I don’t think I presume too much to suggest that, had not establishment folks like Ken Koehler worked their heads off to defeat me, roads might be a little wider in crucial parts of McHenry County.

Specifically, the five-laning of Route 14 from 176 to Ridgefield Road.

You know. The one that McHenry County College has promised to widen to two northwest- bound lanes.

You can see the current two-lanes of traffic in this picture, taken from The Breakers’ parking lot.

When I drove the state highway engineer to MCC for the Illinois F.I R.S.T. hearing, I specifically mentioned that needed improvement. He was the kind of guy who took in things like that.

Route 31 to McHenry might even be five-lanes.

After all, Route 59 going south from Naperville has been similarly widened.

Oh, well.

I don’t have to leave home to use my computer keyboard.
