“When It Comes to Hypocrisy…”

That was the headline of the email I got Thursday from the Illinois Republican Party Thursday.

It was about an article on this anti- Blagojevich web site, which, if you go way down to the bottom of the page, you learn is paid for by the Illinois Republican Party.

Nothing wrong with that, of course.

It had this good line:

”Barack Obama’s Governor Rod Blagojevich ran on a promise to clean up Illinois state government and is now the most investigated administration in Illinois history,”

among many others.

But, the thought keeps coming to me that the state party should be all over the Rezko trial.

The problem, obviously, is that prominent Republicans keep popping into the news.

Of the four photos on the Tribune’s front page the same day I received the state GOP email, two are Republicans— Illinois’ Republican national committeeman Bob Kjellander and his college Young Republican friend Carl Rove.

Neither have been charged with any crime, but Kjellander was listed as “Individual K” in Tony Rezko’s indictment, newspapers say.

The story was one rank and file Republicans care a lot about:

Honesty in Government.

It used to be that Republican leaders cared a lot about honesty in government.

That theme led to the election of former United States Attorney Jim Thompson.

Then, Thompson agreed to be a high profile honcho on Rod Blagojevich’s transition team.

But the most recent image of former Governor Thompson was his accompanying former Governor George Ryan, whom his law firm defended for free, to prison.

And his firm is the really-in-trouble Governor Blagojevich’s lawyer of choice.

Through all the convictions of Mayor Richard Daley’s minions and the guilty pleas of Governor Rod Blagojevich’s appointees, I don’t remember one email from the Illinois Republican Party taking a deserved pot shot.

Maybe with so many Republicans drawn into the Blagojevich sleaze balls’ trials and cases, the state GOP has no way to seize the high ground.

But, you would at least think some Republican would make an effort.
