Message of the Day – A Crowd

Somehow our family missed a crowded foyer at Port Edward Restaurant on Mother’s Day.

That has not been the case on previous Mother’s Days.

It is certainly difficult not to eat too much at Port Edward’s buffet.

And, the dessert area is a center for sinful food.

My son is not much for sitting at the table after he finishes eating and he asks me to accompany him to the gift shop.

While he looked at all the enticing merchandise, I read a combination history and recipe book. I found the biography of owner Ed Wolowiec quite interesting, having been a patron since the late 1960’s when we Crystal Lake Jaycees went on interclubs there to attend meetings of the Algonquin Jaycees.

The Algonquin Jaycees were a top notch club, winning the most outstanding club in the state award numerous times.

Some, maybe most of the club’s awards are still on the back wall of the original bathroom corridor.

One of the club’s most active members, surely a president at one time, was John Peterman. The last I heard of him, he had robbed a small bank in McHenry County and killed, I think, in a car accident heading north a bit west of Woodstock trying to escape.

Such a sad ending to such a promising guy.

Besides the crowd waiting for the noon sitting, you can see Port Edward across Route 62 behind the new clock tower. Crystal Creek is in the foreground.
