Sun-Times and Tribune Cover for Mayor Daley

The “Here we go again” indictment of 15 city employees, builders, etc., for taking and giving bribes seemed to me to be pretty big news.

But, the Chicago Sun-Times and Tribune didn’t think it was the biggest news of the day. It ran the story on page 6.

The Sun-Times’ front page story was calculated to bring forth sympathy for Mayor Daley on a day when the mayor should have been getting the kind of heat that Tribune columnist John Kass dished out.

Sample:

“City Hall…like a fish,
rots from the head down.”

And, although the Kass column is harsh enough, the story itself appears under the fold of the Tribune’s front page.

What’s more important?

An Associated Press lifestyle article on how people with high blood pressure should test themselves with a home monitor.

I guess they could spend their spring federal welfare check, opps, economic stimulus check on one.

In the late 1970’s I used to subscribe to a mimeographed publication (out of Skokie, I believe) entitled the “Chicago Journalism Review.”

Boy it is needed today.
