Manzullo Among Congressman Making Fuss About Democrats Five-Week Vacation without Energy Plan

Politico’s “The Crypt” covered national Republican house members’ Friday take over of the chamber floor to deliver speeches attacking Democrats’ energy policies or lack thereof.

Although the Democrats turned off the TV cameras, microphones and lights and kicked out the reporters, the United States’ Representatives kept up the fight.

House Minority Leader Roy Blunt of Missouri sent out an email which stated, in part, that “…taxpayers in the gallery…, not surprisingly, agree with Republican energy proposals.”

Specifically mentioned was what 16th district Republican Don Manzullo did:

“Update 5: Republicans are literally hugging each other on the House floor.

“Rep. Don Manzullo (R-Ill.), not normally known as a distinguished orator, just gave a rousing speech, accusing Democrats of stifling dissent. “He referenced President John Quincy Adams, who returned as a House member after being defeated in his bid for presidential reelection.

“Waving his arms and yelling, Manzullo brought the crowd (including a lot of staff shipped in by GOP leaders to fill up the place), and he left the floor to hugs from his colleagues.

“You don’t see that up here every day.”

The reporter must not have heard Manzullo when he is wound up.

After his first campaign, during which, we attended many of the same candidates’ nights, I concluded that, if he were not a congressman, he would be a preacher.

The five-hour protest ended at 5 PM and visitors and staff sent them off “to shouts of ‘USA! USA! USA!’” the article says.

CBS World News reporter Daniel W. Reilly also reported on Manzullo’s speech (on a blog called “Politico,” I think: “

“Rep. Donald Manzullo also delivered a passionate speech, saying today was his late father’s birthday.

“After relating how his father, an Italian immigrant, came to live in Illinois and own a little grocery store, Manzullo brought the crowd to its feet with this line: ‘The people of this country are rising up and saying,

“We want our country back!”‘”

The photo of Congressman Don Manzullo waving his arms was obviously not taken on the House floor yesterday. I shot it Jun 11, 2007, at the press conference excoriating Governor Rod Blagojevich for taking Manzullo’s congressional earmark for the Algonquin bypass out of the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Five Year Plan.
