“Des” and “Dos”

Maybe that’s not the way I should spell the way Bridgeport folks talk.

If so I apologize.

Reading this Chicago Sun-Times article apparently quoted former Mayor Richard Daley law partner Jack George accurately in his defense of a 32 tw0 city franchise extension.

Here’s the paragraph that caught my eye:

“George said the unprecedented extension is needed ‘to ensure that more than 100 existing customers-and all of our potential new customers-understand that the environmentally-friendly cooling system is gonna be available for the [long-term] future when we enter into these contracts with these various people.’”

I don’t know if George is from Bridgeport, but reporters usually clean up what people say and this time Fran Spellman did not.

“…gonna be available…” is what she wrote (emphasis added).

That reminds me the story my Bridgeport native wife tells of her father’s insistence that his kids speak proper English, rather than Bridgeportese.

I am thankful he did.

My wife didn’t turn out to be a Daley Democrat either, although as a Marian Catholic High School project, she worked in Mike Madigan’s 1970 campaign.

Fortunately, she has seen the light as she became wiser.
