Ratification of Huntley Contract Doesn’t Stop More Teacher Union Demands

When does it end?

When will the Huntley Education Association sign the contract their members overwhelmingly approved?

Not for at least a week, it appears.

The Huntley teachers union apparently sent the Board of Education this email on Thursday:

From the HEA:

We would like to schedule a time next week, any day except Thursday, to discuss some of the concerns we still have regarding the contract. Please let us know what time and day work best for you.

Thank you,

Kim Aschenbach and Julie Hunter
HEA Co-Presidents

Isn’t bargaining supposed to be over after a contract is approved by a union’s membership?

In seven months of bargaining, striking and megaphone rallies, weren’t there enough forums for Aschenbach and Hunter to express their concerns?

Are union leaders ever so subtly threatening another strike if more monetary concessions are not made?

Also interesting is how Aschenbach and Hunter want to discuss “some” of the concerns, but apparently not all of them.

And if the board caves in again, will the union come back with still more demands?

I thought the school board had already said,

“We’ll give you all this money, if you’ll stop the strike.”

No, I’m not trying to liken the union leaders to Hitler. It’s just best example I can think of that appeasement has a long history of backfiring. The party appeased just comes back for more.
Or maybe Hunter and Aschenbach didn’t understand what they were recommending their members ratify?

Wait a minute!

Would mean the hired gun “professional” negotiators from the IEA didn’t understand what the teachers were signing off on?

Would that would mean the other teachers on the HEA negotiating committee didn’t understand?

But, wait a minute, don’t all of the teachers on the negotiating committee have master’s degrees?

I wonder if any of the District 158 taxpayer-paid graduate level courses were in how to read a contract.

Once a contract is ratified by the union and approved by the Board of Education, legally I thought it was a done deal.

The union leaders asked for signed tentative agreements from the Board and got them.

Do you suppose there is any problem for the union leaders that their signatures are on these documents as well.

Does this process ever reach the point of unfair labor practices?

The final agreement was posted on the District web site before the teachers voted. Tough to argue “we didn’t know.”

The IEA has plenty of attorneys. They should know.

Professional IEA negotiators. They should know.

Remember that card game you may have played with your children or while growing up.

Do you think the Huntley Board of Education will politely say,

“Go Fish.

“And get back to us when you have signed sign the contract.”
