$1.5 million that Wasn’t Real – Part 2

Yesterday, the first installment explained how Huntley School District 158’s books came to show $1.5 million more money than the district actually had.

Board watchdog Larry Snow noticed.

So let me get this straight,

  • New Administrators in District 158
  • New Auditor in District 158
  • Same ‘Ol Big-Time Financial Errors and a major internal control lapse in the payroll department.

From this Keystone Cops’ performance, you might think the Board majority hired someone who was working as a secretary in a school district to be the Director of Fiscal Services.

Wait a minute, they did.

Just remember in advertising “New“ doesn’t mean “New and Improved.”

Two members of the citizen Financial Advisory Committee sitting in the audience at the meeting. Both were not allowed to have copies of the auditors’ report.

Just as in “Animal Farm,” some are more equal than others.

They might have seen how the audit report had $608,430 for excess of revenue over expenditures, and then with nothing subtracted from this, a few lines down mysteriously became $606,422.

Now that’s some fancy auditing work!

There were plenty of solid challenges that the auditors’ numbers weren’t right.
