Softening Up Manzullo

February 04, 2009 By: Cal Skinner Category: 16th Congressional District, Campaign Diaries, Don Manzullo

National Democrats ran ads against 16th District Republican Congressman Don Manzullo, among 27 others, after he voted against the Democratic Party’s stimulus package.

That’s what I’ve read a couple of places, “Campaign Diaries” being one of them.

The commentator observes:

“…we are not used to hearing the names of Tom Latham, Donald Manzullo, Thad McCotter and Roscoe Bartlett. Latham and McCotter seat in Democratic-leaning districts, but the DCCC did little to help their Democratic challengers in the 2008 cycle; with so many other Republican targets now taken care of, the DCCC could turn its attention towards them.

“Manzullo, meanwhile, represents a district that Bush convincingly won in 2004 but that Obama triumphed in this fall; the DCCC thus seems to be paying attention to IL-16.”

The text of a typical radio ad can be found in the article.

Manzullo received 60.9% of the vote in November to Democratic Party candidate Robert Abboud’s 36.1% to Green Party candidate Scott Summers’ 3.1%.

Rockford does have a higher than average unemployment rate, however. It was 10% in November, 2008. It is now 12.5%.

Don Manzullo and his Democratic Party opponent Robert Abboud can be seen at a Rod Blagojevich-bashing press conference near the intersection of Routes 31 and 62.
