I opened my Chicago newspapers and both had news about Governor Pat Quinn’s 50% income tax hike proposal.
The Chicago Tribune’s headline screamed,
What Quinn’s budget
may cost you
may cost you
The highlighted summary said,
- Raise income tax 50 percent. Individuals would pay 4.5 and corporations 7.2 percent.
- Double driver’s license fees to $20.
- Raise license plate sticker fee $20, to $99.
- Triple income tax exemption to $6,000 per person.
- Declare state sales tax holiday for 10 days in August on clothing, school supplies.
- Provide modest bump in education funding.
- Include major construction program for mass transit, roads and schools.
And, under Quinn’s photo appears
“Gov. Pat Quinn supports legislation to boost tax by up to $1 per pack over two years.”
On the front page of yesterday’s Chicago Sun-Times says,
GOV UNVEILS BUDGET
HOW
IT’LL
HIT
YOU
Later, when the mail arrived, there was a fund raising pitch from National Taxpayers United of Illinois’s Jim Tobin.
The outside of his envelope read
STOP GOV. QUINN’S TAX
INCREASES!
