This Is Tax Hike Escape Weekend

McHenry County has three legislators who deserve to be remembered this weekend as you go to the liquor or grocery store to stock up on wine, liquor and beer.

They are State Senator Pam Althoff and State Representative Mark Beaubien and Mike Tryon.

All three voted to hike liquor taxes:

  • 23 cents a gallon for beer
  • $1.39 a gallon for wine
  • $8.55 a gallon for liquor

As you go shopping this weekend, keep them in mind.

The proceeds, they will remind you will go to good things. Roads, schools, you name it.

State Senator Dan Duffy and State Rep. Jack Franks voted against the tax hikes.

  1. I have contacted Mr. Tryon. I must admit to be shocked about his vote. I doubt he will have a "good" explaination, but will listen to what he has to say.

  2. The tax on hard liquor went from $4.50 per gallon to $8.55 per gallon, an increase of $4.05 per 128-ounce gallon or 3.16¢ per ounce, or 4.75¢, less that a nickel, for a 1.5 oz drink.

    The tax on wine went from $0.73 per gallon to $1.39 per gallon, an increase of $0.66 per 128-ounce gallon or 0.5¢ per ounce or 2¢, for a 4 oz pour.

    The tax on beer went from $0.185 per gallon to $0.231 per gallon, an increase of 4.6¢, less than a nickel, per 128-ounce gallon or 0.032¢ per ounce or .43¢, less that a half a cent, for a 12 oz drink.
