McHenry County Board Chairman Wally Dean Dies

The man who was McHenry County Board chairman while I was County Treasurer has died.

Walter J. Dean ran a Wonder Lake grocery store and, later, a small loan company on McHenry’s Green Street.

When Grafton Township Supervisor Harley Mackeben was elected McHenry County’s first County Auditor in 1964, Dean took his place as McHenry County Board Chairman.

Dean was the last non-Republican township supervisor of McHenry Township. He was beaten by Albie Adams, who ran on a GOP slate.

Wally served during a time when all the employees could gather in one place for a Christmas Party.

He, not to mention most of the rest of the board, didn’t know what to make of me. Somehow, one member of the board Ed Buckley, Supervisor of Dorr Township, did get appointed chairman of the Finance Committee by Dean my second two years in office. Buckley was quire supportive of bringing the operations of county government into the second half of the 20th Century.
