Tribune Takes Metra Board Members to Task

It isn’t often that a Chicago Tribune editorial mentions someone from McHenry County.

It happens in legislative endorsements, but rarely elsewhere.

Today former State Senator, now Metra Board member Jack Schaffer got quoted at the top of an editorial entitled,

Asleep at the switch

“We have been guilty of not thinking the unthinkable,” is what Schaffer had said during an earlier interview.

The editorial notes that all the Metra Board members get paid $15,000, except the Chairwoman, who received $25,000.

Another local man mentioned is Jeff Ladd.

The editorial, of course, is commenting on Metra Executive Director being able to get away with taking far more money that he was entitled to.

“Metra’s executive director’s compensation regularly exceeded his state salary by tens of thousands of dollars a year,” the editorial notes.

The RTA, as noted Saturday, although having new financial oversight authority is leaving things up to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
