Abolishing Township Government Not Possible

In light of the dysfunctional Grafton Township government, there have been questions about whether it can be abolished.

The technical answer is “Yes.”

But the real world answer is “No.”

After Wonder Lake’s Bob Anderson got enough signatures on the ballot to force a referendum on abolishing all township governments in McHenry County, which failed, township officials decided they didn’t want that sort of a vote again.

So they prevailed upon the Illinois General Assembly to make it more difficult for uppity citizens to upset their apple cart.

I don’t remember the new petition requirements, but they really don’t matter.

The Grafton Township Board, plus Ancel Glink Partner Keri-Lyn Krafthefer on April 8, 2010.

What matters is that state law says that a 75% favorable vote is needed to abolish township governments.

Note that I did not say “a township government.”

The law, incredibly upheld by the Illinois Supreme Court requires a countywide approval of 75% of those voting.

Anyone in their wildest dreams think that will ever happen anywhere in Illinois?

  1. Citizens of Grafton Township, and easy fix is to abolish Linda Moore.

    Linda Moore please resign.

  2. Can I get an “Amen”? You betcha! AMEN! AMEN! Let’s go for more!

  3. Nice try, Linda but you lose.
You can try to place nice from now until the next election but you’ve already shown your true colors.

    Linda Moore, please resign.

  4. Guess the Moore camp should finally give up on trying to convince people that Township Government needs to be abolished and start doing something good for the residents….if that’s possible.

Cal, you have missed a great story btw. Pam Fender has started a resume lab/computer lab for residents at the Township offices. For those who do not understand (i.e. Linda Moore and her buddies) this is HELPING residents. Great job Pam!

  5. The Moore Train needs to be derailed. It’s time for Grafton Township to get a clean, fresh start. NOTHING is getting done except frivilous lawsuits and mud-slinging.

Moore, Blagojevich, Ryan … what’s the diff????

  6. Cal

The one thing I’ve learned in the time, I’ve been in our Great State is don’t say never. Because you say it can’t be done, and you get proven wrong. It’s interesting that the only people that I read on your posts are only a few people who didn’t vote for Linda in the election. I think we all know how the majority of the residents feel about whats going on in Grafton. The vote for the township building shows who is for what.

  7. I believe that IL has not looked deep enough to fix the financial blunders. Township government is long overdue. When the people of illinois are fully informed of the money the township spends and services provided they will ask the same question. Where is the value?? Talking is one thing people. Action takes real committment. Find out how many signatures, set up a website and drive ILlinois residence there and show the waste of tax dollars. We’ll get the signatures in Illinois, we’ll identify the politicians who voted for the open wallet approach and kick their butts to the curb as well. As long as people think , “it can’t be done”…then I guess it can’t. But rarely said by the “can do” person.

  8. Get rid of all the townships in Illinois.

The Township is nothing but a waist of taxpayers money.

The majority of those people working are hired because they have connections with some supervisor in the department.

Hiring is never advertised in the newspaper so no one has any idea of any opening in any Township.

People do not Go to the meetings because it is a waste of time they THINK.

If more people would attend those meetings something might be questioned.

    Heaven forbid.

GO TO THE MEETINGS AND SEE WHAT TAKES AND GET INVOLVED.

Otherwise vote the townships out the door.
