Vultures over Wonder Lake?

Vultures at O'Hare Airport were featured in Sunday's Chicago Sun-Times.

The Chicago Sun-Times ran a story on page 2 of its Sunday edition about vultures flying over O’Hare Airport. That causes potential problems on takeoffs and landings.

For couple of years I have been seeing large birds in the air over McHenry County.

I thought they were hawks, maybe even eagles.

Not such luck, informed readers have written in the comment section.

More likely buzzards such as I used to see in Ohio when I attended Oberlin College 50 years ago and when I lived on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in the 1940’s and early 50’s. We used to call them buzzards.

  1. American vulture, without a doubt. The wing tip spread (“fingers”) and the beak in the last photo are clearly vultureish. In the third photo, you can even perceive the bare red head.

Vultures may have nasty personal habits, but we would be neck-deep in road kill if they were not around to help clean up.

  2. These are Turkey Vultures. They’ve been around this area for years but the population is growing.
