Message of the Day – 68

Unwritten in any article I have seen (having looked at plenty) is the number you will likely hear on election night:

68

While 39 is the net number of House seats Republicans need to gain to win back a majority in the House, it is likely the talk will shift to 68.

68 is the number that makes it the election of the last hundred years. Precisely about a hundred years.

68 makes it a hugely historic election.

If the Republicans gain 68 seats, they will have more House seats than at any time going back to 1928.

It will exceed the highest number in most of our adult lifetimes and that happened in 1946. A gain of 67 would tie the 1946 total.

There will be few people alive who can actually remember when the country shifted to such a large conservative Republican majority in the House as was in 1928.

The projections (including my own) are looking at more than a 55 seat increase, and likely a 60 plus net gain in the House.

At this point Democrats may want to stay at home, hope 68 seats are gained by the Republicans and then draft someone electable like Hillary to beat Obama in the presidential primary.

Melissa Bean getting voted out of office may pave the way for Hillary to be President. It’s a consolation for any weepy eyed Democrat who wants to stay in denial that liberal Democrat politics are about to be repudiated by a wide margin all across the country.

When the pundits see the number of House seats headed towards more than 60, you will hear plenty of talk about 68.

Don’t worry, there will be plenty of early election night clues how big the number will be.
Relatively few contested seats are on the West Coast. So it won’t be a late, late night to hit a net gain of 39 plus for Republicans.
