EXTRA! EXTRA! Reporter Talks about 66% Income Tax Hike

Throughout the whole income tax debate mention of the percentage of the income tax increase has been verboten. (Have to use a German word once in a while to justify four years in class.  [A commenter notes I spelled the German word wrong.  I have made the correction.  I didn’t say I did well in German.])

The proposals made by the Democrats are described as “a one percentage point increase” or “a two percentage point increase” or even “a one percent income tax increase” by tax hike supporting (and for the latter description, impaired) reporters.

The Chicago Sun-Times, which targets the city and inner suburbs where a higher percentage of tax dependents live, puts its story on page 10. way inside the paper.

Now comes Chicago Sun-Times Springfield reporter Dave McKinney in his story today–“State tax hike closer to a reality”–mentioning a bill “could raise the state’s share of workers’ paychecks to as much as 5 percent, a 66 percent jump” (emphasis added).

Since the tax hike may well be passed by Tuesday, the day before the lame ducks limp off to their pension checks, it’s nice that at least one reporter mentions how huge the increase will be.

And, it’s not as if reporters are not being reminded that a 67% income tax hike is being considered.

House Republican Leader Tom Cross is quoted in the Tribune as saying the Democrats are trying to justify “their raising of the income tax by as much as 66 percent…”

The Tribune, which has more subscribers in the taxpaying suburbs, puts its income tax story on the front page.

But the front page of the Chicago Tribune story still describes the tax hike Democrats are considering as

“a temporary 1-percentage-point increase in the state’s 3 percent income tax rate.”

That’s a 33% income tax hike who have passed seventh grade math.

  1. Four years of German to get a first year word typed wrong is explained by zero years of keyboarding.

Cal was one of the original founders of MCC without the benefit of a typing class.

  2. Actually, I took typing during summer school at Crystal Lake Community High School. It may have been the most valuable course I took.

    I have made the correction.

You don’t have to guess how well I did in German.

  3. Ich bin einer keyboardgeknockenemharder mensch. I still remember the wonderful contributions by Heinrich Schnibble in the Saturday Evening Post. Anyone else remember them?

  4. my great great grandfather invented and patented the space bar and sold it to Remington Typewriter. His son was not impressed with me taking German as he was wounded in the trenches of France in 1917
