Why Were Private Enterprises Open Yesterday, But Public Agencies Closed?

Just asking.

Borders could be seen from between the piles of snow. It was open for business.

Could the profit motive supply the answer?

A private business had a problem with vents being clogged on its roof, which shut down the heating system. It was fixed on Wednesday and business continued.

Property taxes come in regardless of weather.

I am informed that village offices in Lake in the Hills and Huntley were open on Wednesday and Thursday.  The schools in those towns were not, however.

  1. Our block took until after noon Wednesday to get the sidewalks clear with 8 or 9 snowblowers and twice as many adults. Our streets were clear midmorning Wednesday, but I hear that many were not until yesterday. Should the kids walk down the street and then stand in the street waiting for the buses withstanding ridiculous wind chills? Instead let’s have the parents block what clear street there is by parking their cars to wait with the kids because of the dangerous cold. That is a much better idea than just having the kids go a few more days in June.

Why don’t we just give the kids each a shovel and let them clear the way. With the 9,000+ K-12 students in D158 alone they could have had the sidewalks clear by Wednesday morning. Hey how about attaching a ziploc full of salt with holes punched in it to each kid’s back pack. They shovel and then as the walk the salt shakes on the walks behind them. The villages would save money too. This is great. Pure free market profit motive always comes up with the best answer. What are these superintendents thinking? They should really have given this more thought. There are really so many more practical solutions than just making up the days at the end of the year.

  2. Dear Laird: You would first have to pay the teachers to be trained so they can teach the students what to do.

Then like health, nutrition and P.E. classes it wouldn’t work just as with all of this teaching, kid obesity has reached epidemic levels.

The home-schooled kids get out earlier than the public school kids this year.

Are you the Laird whose wife was a teacher-striker in Huntley (Google) or is it some other Laird, if that’s your real name?

  3. So…childhood obesity is the fault of the schools…..ok..sure…I think your tinfoil hat is getting a little tight.

My wife is an excellent bowler if that is your question.

You want to talk about real names…?!?!?
