(WASHINGTON) Congressman Don Manzullo (R-IL), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia & the Pacific, will hold a hearing Tuesday afternoon to examine Japan’s efforts to recover from the tragic earthquake and tsunami that devastated much of the country on March 11, 2011.

The hearing, entitled “The Future of Japan,” will begin at 2 p.m. ET Tuesday, May 24, in Room 2118 of the Rayburn House Office Building. Japan’s Ambassador to the United States, Ichiro Fujisaki, will brief the subcommittee on Japan’s recovery efforts to date. The hearing will also feature the program manager of the Fairfax County Urban Search and Rescue Team and one of the team’s brave rescue dogs who responded to the disaster to help find survivors.

“The good people of Japan have suffered so much as a result of the earthquake and tsunami,” Manzullo said. “The timing of this hearing is important to demonstrate Congress’ support for Japan, and to send a message that Japan is open for business.”

Additional hearing witnesses include:

  • Randall Schriver, Partner at Armitage International.
  • Michael J. Green, Ph.D., Senior Adviser and Japan Chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
  • L. Gordon Flake, Executive Director at the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation.

  1. Please Congressman Don Manzullo…

Demonstrate Congress’ support for American citizens (not Japan) and that the USA is open for business.

  2. While I appreciate that there are many, many topics DC can investigate and discuss, here’s an odd theory.

Lock them all in the building and force them to complete ONE. No more of this time off to visit their constituents so they get reelected. No more of the book signing tours and TV/Cable show appearances. No more golf, basketball, multiple vacations. No more of this strategy delaying nonsense. Sleep together in that one big beautiful room and only get out to use the bathrooms accompanied by a guard who makes sure no notes are passed from the outside or calls coming in or going out. Better yet – put in the port a potties. There are a lot of people who lost their homes using them so it’s good enough for DC too. Make this a group thing – Senate, House and Executive all together – crab it out and do your jobs.

Do I sound frustrated and tired of the game playing – you bet.

Budget? You don’t leave until you do it. A war we shouldn’t have just leaped into? Agree to it or lock up the person who got us into it.

The old ways haven’t worked – especially not since the last presidential election – let’s try something new.

All the flubs that have gone on with the wrong people getting money and the right people getting passed by? You’ve got 1 day locked up to decide who’s at fault and hold them accountable – even if it’s the people in DC’s highest offices. If it’s incompetent employees fire them and put in someone who can do the job. There are plenty of unemployed non-crony people looking for work to support their families.

    Arrrrggghhhh
