An interesting email about the Village of Johnsburg’s having paid someone’s property taxes.
What can that be all about?
Could the village be trying to prove it owns the property?

Dear Village of Johnsburg Taxpayers,
I know how awful Tax Day was, taking our hard earned money and paying the first installment of our property taxes.
Imagine my surprise when my check was refused by the McHenry County Treasurer because on May 13, 2011, someone had paid not only my first installment but actually paid both installments of my 2010 taxes on one of my parcels.
Remember that the bills were mailed out on May 12, 2011.
I had not even received my bill in the mail and someone already had paid both my tax installments.
Through the FOIA Act I have confirmed a check was issued by the Village of Johnsburg to pay both installments.
Under normal circumstances I would appreciate the kind gesture of the village, but I am appalled that public funds have been used in this manner.
I find it ironic that on May 19, 2011(six days after the Village paid for my tax installments), President Ed Hettermann sent out a Press Release to the Johnsburg Resident’s asking for our help by,
“Asking residents to contact their local state senators and representatives, letting them know they oppose cuts in local funding”.
It seems that our village residents are going to be experiencing tax increases due to the “Stealth Tax”.
The Village Residents need to take a stealth approach to the spending habits of the Village of Johnsburg.
Before you call about the “Stealth Tax” call the elected and appointed officials in Johnsburg and do some old fashioned investigation at the local level.
I say that the Johnsburg resident’s should play “Inspector Clouseau” and call the Village of Johnsburg immediately and ask how a tax exempt village can pay personal property taxes with our hard earned tax dollars? Another question for all the Inspectors is this….How many other personal property tax installments did the Village of Johnsburg pay? Are there more……..

I wish my town had a surplus like that! We, supposedly, barely get by!
My understanding is that this issue is being driven by the village clerk, who is alleged to have been knowingly giving people (including the police) false information about this property, which the village has never maintained or even been aware of until a repeat trespasser started commiting vandalism and telling the police that said clerk allowed him to be there.
There seems to be a major ethical and legal issue here, involving an increasingly desperate attempt by her to cover her…er, posterior.
