Can’t eat wheat? Not a problem at Nick’s Pizza & Pub! The restaurant company invites all guests to try the gluten-free menu offerings and celebrate National Celiac Disease Awareness Day on Tuesday, September 13, 2011, during operating hours, from 4 to 10 p.m. in Crystal Lake and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. in Elgin. Enjoy Nick’s Pizza & Pub’s gluten-free pizza crust and Redbridge beer—and now offering gluten-free bruschetta and Woodchuck cider, too!
Allergen awareness is important to the Nick’s Pizza & Pub team. The gluten-free 10-inch pizza crust is mixed up and packaged in gluten-free facility, and it bakes in its own aluminum pie tin to avoid cross-contamination with Nick’s Pizza & Pub’s traditional and whole-wheat crusts. Most pizza toppings are also gluten-free, including the proprietary cheese blend and family-recipe tomato sauce.
According to the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness, September 13 is dubbed “National Celiac Disease Awareness Day” in honor of Dr. Samuel Gee (1839-1911), a leader in celiac disease research and the doctor who identified a link between celiac disease and diet. Celiac disease is an autoimmune digestive disease triggered by consumption of the protein called gluten, which is found in wheat, barley, and rye.
