Outback Steakhouse Replies to Tea Party Complaint

A photo the protestors at Crystal Lake Outback Steakhouse sent yesterday. "Fired for a bracelet. HONK -4- Free Speech."

Yesterday, this story was posted from information provided by McHenry County Blog readers.

Now a reader has forwarded a reply that she got from Crystal Lake Joint Venture Partner Bob Irons:

“Thank you for contacting the Outback Steakhouse website.

My name is Bob Irons and I am the Joint Venture Partner for Outback in the Chicago area which includes the Crystal Lake, IL location.

I am aware of the media story about a waitress who was allegedly terminated for wearing a tea party bracelet.

Please be assured that this story is not true. We have not terminated a waitress for wearing a tea party bracelet.

The following came as a comment from Outback Steakhouse below this article. I thought it deserved to be put in the article:

Thank you for your interest in Outback Steakhouse.

The employee was not let go because of her Tea Party bracelet. On the night in question two separate tables complained about her lack of attention – one flagging down the manager to pay their bill as they could not find her and another going to the bar because they received the wrong drink and could not find her.

When the manager spoke to the employee about this she responded by yelling at him with a hostile attitude. This is why she was fired. She was not fired because a customer complained about her bracelet. That would have simply been handled by asking her to take off the bracelet.

As to the Illinois Department of Employment Security letter stating she was fired for wearing the bracelet – this simply reflects what the employee told them. No hearing was held that we participated in, nor did we submit any information regarding her claim.

I would also point out this bracelet is not a Marine Corps bracelet nor is it a bracelet supporting our troops. The bracelet has only the motto “Don’t Tread on Me” followed by “November 6, 2012”. November 6, 2012 is the next Presidential election. The bracelet does not have any Marine Corps insignia. When the customer asked the employee about the bracelet, she said it was a Tea Party bracelet.

  1. Damage control, trying to save their behinds. Outback knows that they fired her wrongly. How about admitting your mistake, instead of the lies? Cowards.

  2. Yes- someone needs to admit their mistake, instead of lying. In the real world, employees can every bit as skilled at lying as managers.

Fabricating a story like this would might make it possible for the terminated employee to collect unemployment.

  3. “might make it possible”- not “would might make…” Sorry.

  4. Thank you for your interest in Outback Steakhouse.

  5. I personally don’t care if they did fire her for it, in fact I fully support it.

If it pisses off a teabagger its good for America.

  6. Outback didn’t fire her illegally, dumbwad. Illinois is an at-will state. And seriously, who are the stupid people with the ‘Freedom of Speech’ signs – they DO know this wouldn’t be covered by the first amendment, right?

I mean, since they are tea partiers, they MUST have read the Constitution, right?????

  7. Outback Steakhouse does have a reputation for firing people they don’t like and giving the reason as poor job performance, etc.

I just recently ran into my favorite waitress who had been serving us for 4 years at a Outback in Palm Coast, FL.

When I asked her how she has been, she burst into tears.

She had just been fired from Outback suddenly and without notice.

She is a single mom of a 5 year beautiful little girl now facing homelessness.

The reason given was customer neglect.

The real reason is that the owner/manager is good friends with another waitress there that has been harrassing this single mom for months.

This was a personal vendetta firing 4 weeks before Christmas.

    Who does this?

She had been called to the office the night before and told she needed to ask the manager’s permission before she cut herself from the floor to close the register.

She made sure the last customer was taken care of and had been closing in that restaurant for years.

He told her that now that they had the talk, he was sure she would not do that again without his permission.

She thought the incident was over.

Next day she walks in to work, he takes her to the office and tells her she’s fired.

She is begging him not to fire her – rent is due – she has a little girl to support – she has been an excellent employee the intire 4 years of working there under previous owners.

Who fires a single mom 4 weeks before Christmas?

One heartless bad owner/manager named Paul Barnes does.

  8. Hey Alex are you a complete Jag or just a Leftist whack job???

It was STATED AS WRONGFUL! Not Illegal!

The Constitution does not protect a person in the private sector but, there was also not anything in the dress code about wearing such a bracelet so it is wrongful termination!

Since you are obviously out to bash the TEA PARTY, then you might want to be reminded, that the CONSTITUTION does not protect the right of OWS to ( Demonstrate) in a PRIVATE park but yet they are allowed to even after the mayor asked NYPD to remove them legally, a judge throws in an injuction to prevent it!

I was at this protest at Outback and it’s scum like you that are ruining this great nation.

If this was someone you were close to, ( I was not just a fellow Patriot) You’d be singing a different tune. God Bless America !
