Fox River Grove Sales Taxpayers Safe from Taxeaters for Time Being

Not since the 2009 Grafton Town Meeting has a tie vote been as important.

Then, the question was “Should Grafton Township construct an office building on real estate purchased by the township on Haligus road in Lake in the Hills, Illinois?”

The vote was 70-70 and, according to Robert’s Rules of Order, tie vote lose.

Today the count for the referendum to hike the Fox River Grove sales tax 25% (from one percentage point to 1.25 percentage points) was finalized.

The measure passed handily in the Lake County portion of the village.

The vote was 30-19 in Lake County.

It failed narrowly on the McHenry County side of the line.

In the more populous McHenry County portion of Fox River Grove, the vote was 441-430 against the tax hike.

Add the two together and the tally was 460-460.

A tie.

And ties fail.

  1. Townships should be consolidated or eliminated.
