Administrative Leave without Pay

The small town of Dixon figured out how to put an employee on unpaid administrative leave.

When one of his Sergeants was arrested and indicted on multiple felony counts, McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren could not figure out or refused to put him on administrative leave without pay.

Dixon Mayor James Burke, in office about as long as Nygren, on the other hand, apparently has found a way to do it for his Comptroller, Rita Crudwell.

She was charged yesterday with absconding with $30 million.

The city’s annual budget is $8-9 million per year.

Today’s Chicago Tribune reports on unpaid leave, as well as the replacement of the outside auditors who didn’t notice millions of dollars walking out the door or that financial duties were not segregated.

Administrative Leave without Pay — 6 Comments

  1. Nygren has to pay his boy….. there are a “Pyle” of secrets being held in the mans head!

The McHenry County board are all cowards and won’t step in to tell the “Boss” what is right for the tax payers sake.

At this point its become comical actually. We’ve reached the part in this movie where you begin to root for the ‘bad guy.’ God bless Nygren, he is the man!

Keep up the good work Sheriff……..

  2. What is it with you guys? (Cal & Gus) Are you hard of hearing, illiterate or just plain stupid or is it vindictive.

Do you think that the Controller in Dixon is covered by a collective bargaining agreement?

That’s one of the impediments to Nygren stuffing Pyle in a bucket – that and case law as has been amply mentioned in Crackpott’s Gossip Rag.

You suggest that Mayor Burke whose tenure in office rivals Nygren’s is “smart enough” to dump his controller without paying her.

How about this? If she has a contract at all, it provides for termination in the case of wrong doing plus she can probably be fired for parting her hair on the wrong side – anyone who hasn’t spent his life at the public trough like you would realize that.

The other thing… if Burke is so smart and the city has an annual budget of $ 8-9 million per year, how is that she was able to steal approximately half that amount each year for six years running?

You DON’T need an auditor for that, all you need to do is be able to do simple arithmetic without removing your shoes and socks.

  3. Do you live under a bridge? Dixon’s Rita Crundwell is under an entirely different set of circumstances than Pyle.

She is appointed or at least does not have any property right in her job.

She certainly is an at will employee.

I’m sure I read a very concise and succinct legal explanation on this blog about “the why” he was on paid leave; but it seems some think a pound of flesh is more important than following due process and not taking a chance of letting him walk on the serious charges.

Give it a chance and he’ll either resign of be fired just before he goes BU-bye to the big house.

  4. Some commenter’s here give Pyle way too much credit.

”Secrets being held in the mans head!” (Politician Not).

Any person thinking he has any leverage over Nygren or the MCSO is as nuts as he is.

Go back to your Oliver Stone shrine and conjure up some more conspiracy theories.

Pyle is so stupid he let some sick perversion kiss away his $90,000 a year job and his hopes of future gainful employment just flew out the window. (When he gets out of prison as an old man)

For Cal to try and compare Pyle to the Dixon case is ridiculous.

The employment arrangement was totally different, plus this buffoon in Dixon wasn’t the brightest bulb in the pack with her flagrant theft.

My first thought is that everyone on the Dixon City council must have been totally ignoring financial reports because Helen Keller could have seen the red ink.

Of course she was summarily let go.

She is under the thumb of the Mayor and to get her off the payroll is simply an up or down vote.

I doubt it even required a vote.

Her employment is probably at the pleasure of the Mayor.

  5. Wild Bill – -you need to be educated on this issue.

What you speak of would apply to a DEPUTY.

    Pyle is a SGT.

    Different story.

He is not covered by the union

He would go before the Merit Commission – they can put him on leave without pay.

    They keep canceling meetings!!!

    Politician is correct.

Nygren needs to keep this guy quiet.
You owe Cal and Gus and apology.

  6. “…….. plus this buffoon in Dixon wasn’t the brightest bulb in the pack with her flagrant theft.”

    Oh really?

Looks to me like she lived pretty good IN THE OPEN for a lot of years using ?”buffoon”? brains.

Where were the keen eyes and checks and balances?

Apparently a lot of people including those who should be watching for such stuff didn’t see “it”.

Some have suggested some of them might be in on “it”.

I’m sure it’s not the first time someone pinch hits for an absent employee and stumbles on (alleged) nonsense going on.

Entities (school districts, companies, charities, etc.) have to make a choice to let it out in the open or cover it up so they don’t look stupid or more financially vulnerable in other areas as well.

Someone besides this comptroller knew how much money came in and went out.

Even if it was rounded off to the nearest million, you’d think they had to know that something wasn’t adding up.

Even local residents tend to find this stuff out simply because they can add and subtract.

Whether or not they come forward depends on a lot of things.

Are there any management letters, findings, reports laying around that somehow didn’t make it to the council people?
