State Rep. Mike Tryon Attends Bill Signing for Legislation Creating Diabetes Awareness Day

PLAINFIELD….. State Rep. Mike Tryon (R-Crystal Lake) joined Governor Pat Quinn on Tuesday as House Bill 5003, which designates November 14 of each year as Diabetes Awareness Day in Illinois, was signed into law.

Tryon, who suffers from Type II Diabetes, said the new law brings a heightened awareness to the need for diabetes awareness and prevention efforts in Illinois.

“Today one of every ten Illinoisans is living with diabetes and that number is expected to increase to one of every three Illinoisans by 2050,” said Tryon.

“This new law will allow for an expansion in our outreach efforts to make people aware of the importance of diabetes awareness and prevention.”

Through the new law, Illinois government will work with the private sector to increase the amount of diabetes information that is available.

“Hospitals, businesses and other organizations will join forces with our diabetes caucus to make sure people have access to diabetes screenings and information,” said Tryon.

“When people know the risk factors and are able to receive free access to screenings, this disease can be managed or prevented, and people can live relatively normal lives.”

With the signing of House Bill 5003 into law, Diabetes Awareness Day will be a permanent annual event in Illinois. For more information and to learn if you are at risk for diabetes visit www.ilgadiabetes.com.
