Algonquin Village Administrator Bill Ganek Retiring
A press release from the Village of Algonquin:
Algonquin Village Manager Announces Retirement
ALGONQUIN, IL – Village Manager William Ganek has announced his intention to retire in early 2013. Ganek, a resident of Algonquin, has been the Village Manager since 1992 and has served in local government for 35 years.
Prior to coming to Algonquin, Ganek was the Director of Planning with the City of Crystal Lake and a Senior Planner with McHenry County.
During his tenure as Manager, Ganek oversaw tremendous growth in the Village.
In 1992, the assessed valuation of Algonquin was approximately $211 million; this valuation grew to $1.08 billion in 2011.
The Village’s population also grew from approximately 12,000 in 1992 to over 30,000 residents today.
The commercial development along Randall Road, including the
- Algonquin Commons,
- River Pointe, and
- Oakridge Court shopping centers, as well as the
- Algonquin Corporate Campus,
were approved and constructed during his tenure. Further, many of Algonquin’s parks, including Spella, Cornish, and Kelliher, were developed and financed utilizing grant funding under Ganek’s direction.
Additionally, Ganek oversaw the transformation of Village operations in order to meet the increasing demands of the community.
This includes the construction of new Village facilities and infrastructure.
Algonquin’s Village Hall and Police Station, Public Works Facility, Water Treatment Plant #2, Water Treatment Plant #3, and expansions of the Wastewater Treatment Facility were financed, designed and constructed under Ganek’s leadership.
As a result of Ganek’s management capabilities, Algonquin residents can be proud of the strong economic position of the Village, which now has a property tax rate 7 percent lower than in 1992 and a AA+ bond rating.
The Village also has maintained a balanced general fund budget for each of the 20 years of Ganek’s service to the community.
“It has been an honor to serve Algonquin and the Board over the past 20 years. I’ve had the privilege to work with many outstanding people during that time.
“I look forward to working with President Schmitt and the Board during this transition period. The Village has a highly professional staff motivated to make Algonquin one of the best communities around.”
The Village has retained Voorhees Associates LLC of Deerfield, Illinois, to assist in the recruitment and selection for the next Village Manager.

Wow!
We Algonquin residents knew this day would come.
Bill Ganek has been the steady anchor for 20 years at Algonquin Village Hall. He will be sorely missed.
Next year’s Algonquin village elections are shaping up to be a potential watershed.
Village President John Schmitt & Trustee Bob Smith have been on the board for 20 years themselves.
Trustees Brian Dianis & Jerry Glogowski are finishing 2nd terms & Village Clerk Jerry Kautz has been in office since the 80s.
The Ganek retirement alone makes 2013 a year everything changes, including possibly the remainder of the board.
