Catholic Bishops Address 2012 Election

The “Religious Liberty” banner on St.Thomas Catholic Church is echoed by small bumper stickers on many area cars.

Tucked into the bulletins of Catholics throughout Illinois, including St. Thomas Catholic Church in Crystal Lake, were letter-sized messages on the 2012 election.

The message informs parishioners that for the next three weeks there will be three more inserts.

Week 2 will feature “Conscience.”

Week 3 addresses the “Importance of evaluating a candidate’s position on public policy issues.”

And in week 4, about two weeks before the November 6th election, the topic will be “Our profound concern for religious liberty.”

Catholic Bishops Address 2012 Election — 14 Comments

  1. LCTruth…..I have never seen anyone spend as much time on a blog site. You

spend more time here than Cal. Pathetic.

  2. Is the Catholic Church going to educate folks on the Church’s position on the death penalty?

    Or war?

    How about dealing with poverty?

Or has the Church reduced itself to only caring about abortion, despite what Rome says?

  3. Dave,

You are so wrong, I don’t even know where to begin.

No organization in the history of the world has dedicated more energy and resources for the poor, underpriveleged, and disadvantaged that the Catholic Church.

    They continue to do so.

True social justice is known because of the likes of St. Francis, St. Vincent, and Mother Theresa among millions of others.

NO ORGANIZATION, – secular, private, or religious – comes even close to the Catholic Church.

Standing up for the most vulnerable and voiceless, the UNBORN, is just ONE of those courageous stands the Catholic Church has consistently held.

“Dreams meet daybreak”….and the Catholic Church has done wonders…..2000 years and counting.

  4. Skeptic, the Catholic church sure didn’t care much about the vulnerable and voiceless children being raped by priests.

At least not for the last half of the 20th century.

  5. Oh the irony of both arguing that conscience doesn’t mean you are allowed to disagree with the catholic church and that they are supposedly concerned about religious liberty.

  6. How about “intrinisically evil” actions like covering up the rape of children?

Oh wait, that doesn’t count, they are the church.

You are only supposed to do as they say, not as they do.

  7. Same old lazy Anti-Catholic drivel.

That is the argument of people who just hate the Catholic Church.

Though sadly people within the Church, like the rest of the world in all phases, fall victim to sin – even heinous sin like rape of children.

However, the Catholic Church has made the changes necessary to rid itself of this terrible evil.

Organizations like the Public Schools continue with child rape and molestation at rates as high or higher than even decades ago.

The Catholic Church is now the great example of success in clearing an organization and preventing these perverted mosters from entering seminary.

The Church now is where other organizations go for assistance in ridding the evil plight of such heinous acts from their ranks.

Zach, if the wealfare of children was your true interest, you should be PRAISING the Catholic Church for it’s exemplary successful action in preventing child abuse.

Instead, you use that argument ad nauseum to try to discredit the Church, and you do so for that purpose only.

This type of argument is akin to Latin America’s argument of continuing to blame colonialism for their poverty.

It’s intellectually lazy, it’s simply wrong, and it’s motivated by hate.

  8. Skeptic.

    You are sooooo right.

See, the anti-Catholics have no answer.

They spew their vitriolic hate, and hide beneath a rock.

    They are filled with hate.

    You are so right.

Reason leaves the room when hatred enters.

    Fide et Ratio!!!!!!!!

  9. **You are so wrong, I don’t even know where to begin.

No organization in the history of the world has dedicated more energy and resources for the poor, underpriveleged [sic], and disadvantaged that the Catholic Church. **

    Nope… I’m right.

But here is the funny thing – I agree with you.

The Catholic Church HAS done a ton on many of the issues that you and I mentioned.

And I greatly respect them for them for that.

But they are very clearly focusing on just one issue in their political manipulation, and ignore the rest.

I don’t see them refusing to serve communion to folks who vote to support the death penalty.

I don’t see them refusing to serve communion to folks who vote to dismantle social programs.

They only take a political hardline on abortion, and abortion only.

They didn’t use to do that.

  10. You don’t know your Catholic history, David. You were probably educated in a Jesuit High School.

1953: Bishop of New Orleans threatened excommunication of Catholic supporting segregation in Catholic schools. He excommunitcated many and this was upheld by Pope Pius XII.

Although I agree that the priests and bishops should do more publically, they do privately tell politicians who disagree with Church teaching OPENLY to refrain from communion. This is for the Benefit of their own souls (1 Cor 11:27.)

The Church does NOT universally condemn capital punishment. It depends on the situation and the country. John Paul II said that in the developed world it is hard to come up with a rational argument in support of the dealth penalty in countries who could afford and have the facilities to incarcerate for life. ABORTION IS ALWAYS EVIL. THERE CAN BE NO RATIONALE FOR ITS USE. Capital Punishment can be morally permissable.

  11. You completely miss the point.

You use an example from 60 years ago to say that the Catholic Church cares about issues other than abortion.

    You just proved my point.

  12. wow….if you don’t see it Dave, you never will.

Protestants and Jews really don’t have a beef with the Catholic Church. In fact, though theologically they disagree with the Church, they respect it.

The only hard core Catholic-haters like you Dave, are ex-Catholics.

Sorry you left, David. It was probably your “Catholic” education. Good luck to you. I hope you come back to the one Church (Matthew 18:17).

  13. **The only hard core Catholic-haters like you Dave, are ex-Catholics. … It was probably your “Catholic” education. **

Not a Catholic hater, nor am I an ex-Catholic.

And I got a good public school education, in Crystal Lake.

    Good try though.

    It was a valiant effort.
