McSweeney Calls Beaubien “Closed Minded”

That’s the message on the post card delivered on October 2nd from Republican candidate Dave McSweeney about his Mike Madigan-financed “Independent” opponent Dee Beaubien.

He again pounces on Dee Beaubien’s characterizing the 67% income tax hike rammed through the Illinois House by Speaker Madigan as “fair.”

In his latest “Vote NO on Dee Beaubien” mailing, David McSweeney says his opponent is “closed” minded.

He footnotes that to the September 5th Chicago Tribune Editorial Board meeting.

The foot notes seem to remain the same as on the previous mailing.

Contrasting the “closed mind” of Dee Beaubien is how McSweeney pledges to open Illinois for business.
On the back of the mailing is McSweeney’s pledging to open Illinois for business.

McSweeney Calls Beaubien “Closed Minded” — 10 Comments

  1. Wow McSweeney really is horrible isn’t he?

He removed the URL from the “Fair” quote to stop people from going to that article and reading for themselves that Beaubien didn’t say the tax increase was fair– in fact she said she’d have voted against it and would vote to repeal it if the issue came up for a vote.

He really isn’t fit to hold public office.

And of course, a thinking person can’t help but ponder that if his one charge against her is fabricated, what does that say about as a candidate?

If she’s so bad why does McSweeney have to make things up about her?

  2. Joe,

Take a minute to breath from your attacks on McSweeney.

The footnote on her use of the word “Fair” to describe the tax increase indicates she said it in an editorial board meeting with the Chicago Tribune.

No candidate will quote a newspaper editorial board if the quote is not true.

Especially before the papers endorsements go out.

So Joe, go ask your candidate directly if she said it.

She has to respond yes or she is lying.

Better yet, put a camera on her and ask the question and then verify with the Trib.

  3. @Stratton’s Ghost – then lets see the whole quote, in context.

It should be very easy to produce.

McSweeney is continually using one word of a quote that he refuses to give the full context to. If you don’t find that suspicious, I am not sure what to tell you.

There is only one reason why one would refuse to give the context for the quote. And that is because the context will prove that McSweeney is lying.

  4. McSweeney previously footnoted the “quote” to the Tribune report of the Editorial board meeting. When I called McSweeney’s office to ask about the quote, they told me it was from the Tribune.

When I said that Beaubien never said that in the the Tribune article I was greeted with “yes she did, Goodbye.”

I’ve contacted Beaubien she said she is 100% against the tax increase- she would have voted against it and if it comes up for review during her term she’d vote against it then.

i am sorry if I am upsetting you by sticking with this issue.

Blatant dishonesty does ruffle my feathers.

This webpage seems to be the only place this issue is getting any exposure- and that is only because of the comments.

Cal seems to have pretty extensive access to McSweeney- as exhibited by yet another posting about him today.

I wish Cal would ask McSweeney to produce the quote.

Of course, Cal as a “good Republican” might not want to follow the trail that leads to finding out she never said that.

  5. Joe is exactly right.

This is an important issue, and Dee has been explicitly clear about her thoughts on the income tax increase – she wouldn’t have voted for it, and she will vote to repeal it.

Personal note – I disagree with Dee on this, so I am not defending Dee on this point because I agree with her.

I am defending her because I think that McSweeney is lying.

There are a couple of salient points:

1 – McSweeney’s use of just one word – “fair” – is very telling and pretty clearly implies that there is a lot of context left out.

2 – McSweeney’s (and his friends’) blatant refusal to give the full quote is also very telling, and implies that once given the full context, we will all see that McSweeney is lying and/or blatantly distorting what Dee said to the Trib Ed Board.

There is a very simple way to make Joe and me shut up about this. Produce the full quote, in context.

  6. Here is the Tribune editorial board questionnaire that McSweeney originally linked.

As I read it this was perhaps submitted in writing by Beaubien and the “N/A” responses being reproduced makes me think that they printed exactly what was submitted- in it’s entirety.

But if indeed McSweeney has access to additional exchanges between Beaubien and the Editors it….bring it forth!

  7. Joe/Dave,

You seem like intelligent fellas so you understand the old expression, “Don’t piss off people that buy ink by the barrel.”

McSweeney has used this “Fair” line regularly and has said it came out of a Tribune Editorial Board meeting.

To me that means the two candidates must have done a joint interview for the Tribs endorsement.

Poly Sci 101 would say that if McSweeney is lying then he will be called on the carpet by the Trib come endorsement time.

Common sense would indicate McSweeney has too much too lose if he is lying.

    Beaubien has to lie.

What, is she going to come out and say oh yes he is right I think the tax increase is fair?

My guess is all your thoughts and questions will be answered by the only people that can answer them, the Chicago Tribune? (one way or the other)

  8. Cal wants you all to look at his new post, but make sure you also look in the comments where I share further information that I received from the Trib, showing that McSweeney is blatantly distorting what Dee said.
