Home Rule Cities Urged to Pass Gun Control Ordinaces Before It’s Too Late

A press release from the Gun Violence Taskforce of Social Justice Committee of the Tree of Life Unitarian Universalist Congregation:

Home Rule Municipalities Urged to Consider Restrictions on Assault Weapons

McHenry—The Gun Violence Taskforce of Social Justice Committee of the Tree of Life Unitarian Universalist Congregation in McHenry urged four home rule municipalities in McHenry County, to consider banning assault weapons before a deadline is imposed by newly-passed state gun legislation.

In a bill recently passed by both The Illinois House and Senate, local municipalities with home-rule power will have up to 10 days after the Governor signs it into law to enact a ban and after that will be prohibited.

A letter co-signed by the congregation’s Social Justice Committee Chair Patrick Murfin and Gun Violence Task force chair the Rev. Dan Larsen asserted, “These are the types of guns that have been used in mass killings throughout our country, like the murder of students and teacher in Newtown Connecticut. These are weapons designed to kill people efficiently, not for hunting, target practice, or self-defense and should only be in the hands of the military and police.”

The letters were mailed to McHenry Mayor Susan Low, Crystal Lake Mayor Aaron Shepply, Lake in the Hills Village President Paul Mulcahy, and Prairie Grove Village President Stanley Duda.

Cities …“ought to at least give their own citizens an opportunity to express their views. There are people with strongly-held views on both sides of this issue who deserve to be heard,” the letters said. “Local officials should know how everyone feels before they act or fail to act.”

These municipalities were urged to contact their own legal counsel immediately to review their options.

  1. What part of “shall not be infringed” do these people NOT understand!

Illinois got in trouble because they tried to ban everything.

Now we have a bunch of cuckoos that want to decide what is legal and what isn’t.

    Arms are arms.

    Period!

We have every right to arm however we deem necessary.

    It’s in the Constitution.

  2. Cindy, I respectfully disagree. Arms are not arms as there is a vast difference between a grenade launcher, an AR-15 with automatic firing pin, and a 9 mil. I just want to clarify as well that Illinois did not get in trouble because the state tried to ban ‘everything,’ as you stated. The state got in trouble because they banned conceal carry, which is not the same as banning everything. I’m not saying that I’m not for conceal carry because of this question: How often, when you travel to other states, do you think, “gee, there may be someone with a gun in this Wal*Mart I’m in right now?” You don’t and I don’t either. The fact is that crime drops once conceal carry is passed across a state. When Gabby Giffords was gunned down in Arizona, there was a man who was conceal carrying in the CVS next to where Gabby was and he drew his weapon even though it was not necessary and he never fired a shot. Nevertheless, there is good behind conceal carry, but I really would like to caution many members of this community to think twice about the law and realize the United States Constitution states:

“A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

The Constitution does NOT state you have a right to bear arms. This amendment has been interpreted by lawmakers and courts alike to mean we have a right to bear arms. If you just reverse the wording: “The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed [as] a well regulated militia [is] necessary to the security of a free State.”

Clearly the founders knew to not end a sentence with a prepositional phrase and instead chose to word this amendment as it is today. It does sound better!

I’m just trying to be devil’s advocate here. Please no personal attacks or things like calling me an idiot as I am not such and just enjoy political dialogue. Thanks!

  3. That’s too bad. I had a couple of good points… 🙁 You were a Herman Cain supporter weren’t you? Because he promised bills would be no more than 3 pages!

In any case, I am neither a commie nor than writing a letter. It was a well reasoned argument. Just like this next phrase…..

    GO HAWKS!

  4. Just remember it is not about guns, it is about control.

  5. I’d be shocked if any McHenry County towns acted on this. The right to keep and bear arms is VERY popular in area.

If a town did pass such a ban, it would end the political career of those involved.

  6. Patrick, I was referring to the commies at “Gun Violence Taskforce of Social Justice Committee of the Tree of Life Unitarian Universalist Congregation.” Unless you are a member of that group, I was not referring to you.

Two. The term “assault weapon” was a lie invented by Violence Policy Executive Director Josh Sugarmann.

“Assault weapons—just like armor-piercing bullets, machine guns, and plastic firearms—are a new topic. The weapons’ menacing looks, coupled with the public’s confusion over fully automatic machine guns versus semi-automatic assault weapons—anything that looks like a machine gun is assumed to be a machine gun—can only increase the chance of public support for restrictions on these weapons.” Assault Weapons and Accessories in America, 1988.

The people at the “Gun Violence Taskforce of Social Justice Committee of the Tree of Life Unitarian Universalist Congregation” are playing the same lying game that all gun gun grabbers do: to jackroll people into banning guns based upon looks, not function.

The goal of gun grabbers is to CONFICATE all guns in America – total disarmament of the American people. And banning “black plastic rifles” is nothing but a “good first step.”

  7. Really Gun Violence Taskforce? “only be in the hands of the military and police’?

Experience Aug. 27th on with me, during and after Katrina in N.O. Your Gov. and Police were nowhere to be found for weeks after the storm. I remember thinking it was like the 4th of July at night in the blackout with the sporadic gunfire. I not only concealed carried, but at night open carried! Try parking along the blacked out Louis Armstrong Park, at night, along the Quarter without a gun! LOL. Police? When a few came back to work, I had to pay off Parrish cops for escorts and to protect staged equipment. Even with my La. State Police pass to cross all checkpoints, I had to pay ‘tolls’ of cigs and liquor to National Guard nitwits.

And how did Mayor Nagin (thank God he was just indicted for all his stupidity and hopefully is going to jail) and the ‘Chocolate City’ deal with the anarchy? In a mind numbing decision, they went door to door disarming homeowners who stayed to protect their property. This is exactly what you can expect in Illinois during any crisis. Bad decision after bad decision.

Gov. and Police are ineffective in any kind of crisis. In my past work, I’ve seen it over and over again. I’m not one of those survivalist nuts but I can tell you this. In a crisis, your on your own!

The thought that these little organized naysayers are helping decide the who’s, what’s and where’s of our lives is maddening.

  8. The “Reverend” Dan Larsen head of the Pro Abortion, ultra liberal, left wing Unitarian Universalist Congregation, home of Witches and Wiccans is standing against guns.

    This appears counterintuitive.

They like abortion, killing babies, yet are anti-gun and our US Constitution because why?

    It may kill someone.

  9. I was at the city council meeting on the 17th in McHenry to talk about this issue.

I was the only citizen who spoke about anything.

No offense to anyone here but…..where the hell were you at!!!!

    Politicians dont read blogs.

When I asked the question to the mayor on what their intentions were, she told me this is not the forum for asking questions.

If you are for the Constitution and our rights then you should be at the next council meeting and speak your voice…..get off your ass!!
