Roskam Criticizes Obama-Iraq Nuclear Agreement

A press release from Congressman Peter Roskam:

Roskam: First Step Agreement Continues Dangerously Weak Foreign Policy

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Peter Roskam (IL-06) released the following statement in response to the implementation of the First Step Agreement on the Islamic Republic of Iran’s nuclear program:

“Today’s announcement of a White House-backed interim nuclear agreement with Iran is just the latest example of a weak foreign policy that provides critical economic sanctions relief without first requiring Iran to dismantle its nuclear architecture or stop enriching uranium in its quest for a nuclear weapons capability.

“Recently I introduced legislation that has received rapid support from a broad coalition in the House of Representatives to

  • verifiably prevent a nuclear Iran and ensure enactment of further crippling sanctions should the regime refuse to fully dismantle its nuclear program,
  • end its support for terrorism, and stop human rights violations,
  • persecution of religious minorities, and
  • unjust imprisonment of American citizens.

“I call on my colleagues in the Senate, 59 of whom are already publicly supporting a forceful new sanctions bill, to pass that legislation with all due haste and move the United States away from this dangerous course of appeasement towards Iran that threatens U.S. national security and global stability.”

In November, Congressman Roskam led a bipartisan effort urging the Senate to immediately increase sanctions on Iran. Last month, he introduced bipartisan legislation to verifiably prevent a nuclear Iran by defining acceptable parameters for a final nuclear agreement.
