At the McHenry County Board meeting on January 21st the County passed the 2014 State Legislative Program.  The first two of six directives to the Lobbyists are:

  1.  Support Legislation granting additional permissive authorities for Counties.
  2. Support legislation allowing Counties to expand non-property tax revenue resources.

When the matter came up for discussion, John Hammerand, Republican  (District 4) read these policies to the County Board Members, saying,

  • “We want the power to tax other things beyond property;
  • we don’t want anyone to touch the power we have; and
  • we want more” and
  • that he could not support this Legislative Program as placed before them.”

The Program was approved by Michele Aavang, Yvonne Barnes, Sue Draffkorn, Joseph Gottemoller, James Heisler, John Jung, Ken Koehler, Robert Martens, Mary McCann, Anna May Miller, Robert Nowak, Sandra Fay Salgado, Carolyn Schofield, Ersel Schuster, and Michael Skala.

The six dissenting votes came from

  • Nick Chirikos
  • Diane Evertsen
  • John Hammerand
  • Donna Kurtz
  • Mary McClelland
  • Paula Yensen

Tina Hill, Nick Provenzano and Michael Walkup were absent.

In the past, John has not supported the $100,000 for the paid Lobbyist.

  1. Thumbs up for the NO votes!

I was surprised that both Democrats voted NO.

So I listened to the tape: http://mchenrycountyil.iqm2.com/Citizens/SplitView.aspx?Mode=Video&MeetingID=2366&AgendaID=2252&FileFormat=pdf&Format=Agenda&MediaFileFormat=wmv

My interpretation is that the two Democrats voted against it because it did not contain language which would indicate that the County supported HB0924 which obviously the Board opposed.

Prior to the vote on the Legislative package, a motion was passed to change the word monitor HB0924 to oppose HB0924 and apparently the two Democrats did not agree based on the recording.

  2. More taxes, more power, must be incompetent to manage the County with what they have. Too bad for us.

  3. Any politician voting for ANY tax hike is soon FINISHED, a failed “governor”.

When will idiot politicians get it?

If there is a tax rate of X% and the economy doubles, the effective tax revenue of the governing body doubles.

There is NO REASON for an increase in tax rates if the “governors” do a competent job.

Tax revenue naturally increases based on the free market success.

The only reason for a governmental agency to INCREASE tax rates is an admission of the incompetency of those politicians.

Crystal Lake is the most recent example.

The County now is following in their failed footsteps.

  4. Don’t kid your self Skeptic….

The politicians do …GET IT…for many of them, this is not an election year…and the public will remember when the same politicians don’t raise or even reduce their respective levies when election time comes round again

  5. What a coincidence.

Il pols that want more taxes, at the same time I just get back from the Switzerland of Central America, investigating S.A.’s and exchange controls.

Great, we’re all on the same page.

They want more of my money while I’d prefer to keep it.

Guess who will win the battle of who get’s to spend my money?
