Washington, DC — U.S. Representative Randy Hultgren (IL-14) today voted not to raise the nation’s debt ceiling above $17.2 trillion.

“Our country continues to spend more money than it takes in, borrows money it doesn’t have to make up the difference, and it’s the American taxpayer who pays the bill,” said Rep. Hultgren.

“I cannot in good conscience vote to extend Washington’s borrowing capacity yet again without any meaningful movement to reduce how many taxpayer dollars the government spends.

“I am disappointed by the inability of Washington to do what Americans do every day—spend what they bring in, and nothing more.”

  1. Yes, great stance by the congressman: Let’s show the world fiscal responsibility by NOT paying for bills that we have already wracked up.

Cal, your headline is totally wrong; it should read “Congressman Votes Against Pay Bills for Money Congress Already Spent.”

  2. “… And it’s the American taxpayer that pays the bill…”

    NOT!!!

The whole point is the American taxpayer is not paying the bill, that is why the government keeps borrowing.

I get the point, that expenses need to be cut. So let’s cut. But Randy Hultgren has his sacred cows too.

  3. Hultgren voted for “drastic cuts to food stamps” in the farm bill which amounted to about 1% of the total 81 billion dollar program.

Sacred cows or now, it’s laughable that he would champion that cut, yet allow billions more to be spent.

Not trying to be all or nothing here, but even the GOP leadership was for a no strings attached debt ceiling increase.

Hultgren is making our district look like a bunch of bumbling idiots.
