NW Herald Picks Establishment Candidates for Countywide Races

Mary McClellan

Mary McClellan

The Northwest Herald made endorsements for two of three countywide races today:

The summary of why McClellan is endorsed follows:

“McClellan has a deep knowledge of how the office runs and seems to be a financially responsible candidate who will run the office in a professional way…”

Glenda Miller

Glenda Miller

Miller’s approval merited this:

“Miller largely has been running the office during her time as chief deputy. She knows the job and would ensure a smooth transition.”

I am not going out on a limb predicting the NW Herald will endorse Andy Zinke over Bill Prim. My guess is Sunday, the paper’s largest circulation day.

I’ve taken some heat for saying that McClellan is and Establishment candidate. Perhaps the headline should have read “Establishment-Backed.” That certainly is accurate.

  1. Excellent endorsements!

    Thanks for heads up, Cal.

I wasn’t aware that Northwest Herald made these endorsements.

I will be certain to pick up the Sunday edition too.

  2. McClellan is the establishment candidate?

I don’t think there anyone more establishment than Provenzano?

  3. In Cal Skinner world, if you don’t agree with him, you are the establishment.

  4. Anton, Provenzano the “Establishment” candidate?

How could you possibly make this “outlandish” assertion?

  5. I have 48 years experience identifying the Establishment in McHenry County.

And, even while State Rep. 16 years and County Treasurer 4, I can assure you I was not part of it.

  6. No endorsement by the NWH is worth the paper it is printed on.

First, very few voters even read the paper.

Second, when an editor of the paper sits on the board of a government supported not for profit, he is NOT likely to support anyone who supports smaller government.

Provenzano supports smaller government while McClellan can’t even attend the meetings she is supposed to.

The last thing we need in the Clerk’s office is a person with the mindset of an attorney who obviously is not interested in putting forth the effort required to represent the citizens of McHenry County.

When it comes to the Treasurer’s office we need a person who can bring a new perspective to the office instead of an “that’s the way we have always done it” attitude. We need Jeff Thorsen.

  7. “I have 48 years experience identifying the Establishment in McHenry County.”

Cal, you don’t need your extensive experience to make this call.

Mary McClellan has been licking Zinke’s boots since she arrived on the scene.

  8. If McClellan is the “Establishment” candidate, I have no idea as to who is or if there is an “Establishment”.

She is a relative newcomer, while Mr. Provenzano has been an elected official for 20 years or more.

  9. Hey Mark McG, we all know that Nick Provenzano has not licked anyone’s boots!

Certainly, Nick is not calling in every political favor from his 20 years of non-bootlicking. LOL!

  10. We need Jeff Thorsen because none of the others are as qualified!

    Check it out!

  11. Chief Deputy Treasurer Glenda Miller has true integrity that has honored our county for many years.

We need more elected officials like Glenda Miller that really gives a damm about the people in McHenry County and all people in general, a true humanitarian.

Mary McClellan has no questions about her integrity that we can trust as our new County Clerk, and that is Mary McClellan!

  12. Fukoku: Your endorsement has just sealed my vote for Provenzano!

You obiviously have not been to any of McLellan’s meetings and watched her in action (when she is there, which is rather infrequent).

  13. WOW Knowledge voter, you give me that much power, I am honored!

So based on your mentally, if I endorse Bill Prim, does that mean you will vote for Undersheriff Andrew Zinke?

  14. Fukoku: I think the word you were looking for but was beyond your grasp was mentality?

    No.

You have more then already made up my mind on that one!

  15. The establishment does not need to be “the one who has been around the longest” in this case it is the candidate supported by the regime which has been around the longest.

Take Mitt Romney, he was the establishment candidate for president despite the fact he had not held elected office in a number of years.

  16. Was McClellan even a board member for a year before she decided to run for County Clerk?

    Pretty ambitious.

If the voters elect her as County Clerk, I wonder which office she will start campaigning for next?

Sounds like Barack Obama, get elected to an office but don’t show up because you’re too busy campaigning for the next office.

I am voting for Nick Provenzano.

  17. Thank you for the correction Knowledge voter, I was overwhelmed by the honor that you gave me.

  18. Unfortunately John, Barack Obama won, TWICE by a landslide.

  19. @Teacher155 “Hey Mark McG, we all know that Nick Provenzano has not licked anyone’s boots!”

    I agree with you.

Nick is a snake, career politician.

I’m just pointing out the fact that McClellan worships at the altar of the establishment Republicans.

Whether or not Nick would have jumped on that bandwagon if given the opportunity and whether the masters Nick answers to are worse than the establishment are different issues.

  20. Not sure about the apparent “Estalishment” slam.

All this talk of the “Establishment” must be coming from the Baby Boomer generation.

Only that burntout radical liberal Hippie generation sees the “Establishment” as a bad thing.

The rest os us equate “Establishment” with Mainstream.

And I do agree that McClellan and Miller are the mainstream candidates.

  21. John O’Neill, I like you, I have supported you in the past, and I think you are an honorable conservative.

But when did “ambition” become a bad trait?

Leave the criticism of ambition and success to the Democrats.

Hopefully, Republicans still consider achievement a virtue.

  22. @Teacher155: I think the “establishment” epithet is meant to mean “the people who have personally enriched themselves over the past two decades through local government.”

The Millers. The Don Kopsells. The Keith Nygrens and Bill LaFews who spend next to no time in the office.

All the people who want a cushy government job for life.

    That’s the establishment.

Nic Provenzano aspires to be a part of this class but so far has done a poor job breaking through.

  23. Skeptic – thank you for the kind words of support.

    >> But when did “ambition” become a bad trait?

When you are elected to office you ought to at least get settled in and do the job you’re elected to before seeking another office.

Obama was elected to the US Senate in 2004, took office in 2005, didn’t to do much as a senator, and seemed to immediately hit the talk show circuit campaigning for president… and look what that got us. I’ll stick with Nick.

  24. Whomever is elected County Clerk will have some very big shoes to fill. The person who has worn them has spent, quite literally, her entire adult life working in that office. Schultz has done, by all estimations, a remarkable job and the office is one of leadership in this state.

I must admit that I was saddened and confused both by her retirement and the choice of candidates to replace her.

Provenzano made my choice much easier by effectively removing himself from contention with his public statement that one of his plans upon taking office was to “look around and see what the other county clerks are doing” and that he was going to make the office more efficient.

This just goes to show his lack of knowledge of the operation of this office. If he truly does and could actually see what the other clerks are doing, he’d likely find them staring back at him while looking for Kathy Schultz for guidance in how they could improve THEIR offices.

Provenzano has demonstrated that he really doesn’t know much about that office other than the fact that he WANTS it.

McClennan, on the other hand, (and whom I am not a great fan of so far) has at least visited the office, spoken with Kathy Schultz and tried to understand what has been done and what needs to be done to keep the office the shining example it is.

Whether or not she’s up to the task remains to be seen but I, for one, will vote to give her the chance.

  25. John- Provenzano’s only in the second year of his most recent 4 year term

McClellan is at end of her two year term.

If anyone is abandoning his responsibilities it’s Dominic.

I’ve had a lot of respect for youall but you are bowing down at the alter of a political trickster who is out for ONE thing and that is to win the election and collect a paycheck

A little bit of investigating on your part and you’d be able to see that Mr. Provenzano has NO IDEA about any of the function of the office.

The guy has proposed spending $4 MILLION to install modems on voting machines to increase the reporting times on election results… problem is that the machines ALREADY HAVE MODEMS, and results are reported online pretty damned fast.

Have to wonder who the vendor is that he would be bringing in and what Nick would be getting in return.

You’ll note that Provenzano has accepted $$ in this race from the Pro-Life PAC.

One has to wonder about as someone who is so passionate about the pro life issue, why would he accept one dime from them well knowing that the Clerk has absolutely NOTHING to do with prolife issues.

Call some of the folks that have endorsed him…

Many of them will tell you that they never offered their endorsement or support and some have only had passing conversations with him at best.

Don’t get sucked in, because the people of McHenry deserve much better.

Not sain that Mclennan is the best, just saying that at least she has VALID education, experience and is ethically miles ahed of
