Zinke Quoted in Chicago Sun-Times about Charging Only $16 Daily for Cook County Prisoner

None other than McHenry County Undersheriff Andy Zinke is quoted in a Chicago Sun-Times story about Mayor Daley nephew R.J. Vanecko’s paying only $16 a day for the privilege of serving his sentence in McHenry County Jail, instead of Cook County Jail.

The Chicago Sun-Times reveals that McHenry County only charges $16 a day for prisoners from other counties.

Why is the fee so low?

It seems the Sheriff’s Department has not asked for a judge to raise it since 1997. I think that’s the year in which Keith Nygren was appointed Sheriff.

The Sun-Times points out that the Feds pay $85 per day.

“We’re negotiating with the feds right now,” Zinke is quoted as saying.

“We’re trying to get that up to $100 a day.”

What Zinke didn’t say and the reporters didn’t find is that the Sheriff’s Office supplied financial data to Charles Summerill, whom the County Board hired to facilitate the negotiations which showed the cost per day for the Federal detainees/prisoners was $131.38 per day.

The County only has a couple out of county prisoners per year, Jan Weech told the paper.

Zinke Quoted in Chicago Sun-Times about Charging Only $16 Daily for Cook County Prisoner — 23 Comments

  1. How many non-federal non-McHenry County prisoners do we house each year?

If it’s one or two, it’s really not worth the Sheriff’s time to go in every year and ask for an inflation adjustment.

  2. WOW! Just wow!

I already voiced my opinion on this.

But this new info – WOW!

  3. Obviously AZ wasn’t required to take a math class as a part of his MBA in “Leadership” from Judson “Christian” College as he calls if.

  4. Obviously someone dropped that ball.

$16 a day has to be below cost.

You can’t even get a roach motel for $16 a day.

  5. $365 x 16 = $5,840 annual rate McHenry County charging for Prisoner Vanecko.

    $365 x 85 = $31,025 McHenry County gets from Feds for prisoners.

    $31,025 – $5,840 = $25,185 difference.

    That’s only 1 person for 1 year.

McHenry County is losing $25K per year per prisoner they hold for other counties because no one
bothered to check except for the Sun-Times.

  6. “We are currently in the process of requesting that the fee amount be changed,” said Jan Weech, a supervisor in the McHenry County sheriff’s office, which runs the jail.

“We house very few sentenced inmates from outside counties. It is estimated at three or less per year.”

Vanecko is only serving 60 days.

And he’s paying the tab not Cook County.

  7. So Zinke and the MCSD has no problem sucking more money from the taxpayers by trying to get $100 per day, instead of $85.

“We’re negotiating with the Feds right now”

No, you’re negotiating with us, we the people, the taxpayers!

  8. Another fine Zinke mess

Bill Prim is sure going to find out a lot when he is Sheriff Thank goodness is have the right man at the right time!

  9. FYI: This policy was enacted before Zinke became a leader in the dept, voter.

You, for the second time tonight, have no clothes.

  10. Irregardless of when the policy was enacted Zinke and Nygren should know how much they are being paid by Chicago area counties to house their inmates, that’s just common sense.

The Feds would pay MCSD the $100 or $85.

So McHenry County taxpayers want the highest possible rate because the $100 or $85 is money flowing from the Feds into McHenry County.

Taxpayers outside McHenry County want the lowest possible rate because it’s money flowing out of their pockets into McHenry County.

So collar counties are perfectly happy with the status quo of $16 per day.

What’s amazing is the jail is only 65% filled including the illegal aliens facing deportation.

    The capacity is 650 inmates.

    650 * .65 = 422 inmates now including illegal aliens.

    650 – 422 = 228 empty beds.

Wonder on average how many of the 422 inmates are illegal aliens?

  11. voter, you are correct . . .

the Nygren/Zinke have a SNAFU, no wonder they are going to try to cover it all up . . .

we will all be watching and I am sure more will come out in the coming weeks.

  12. Since when is money insignificant.

The Sun-Times didn’t seem to think it was insignificant.

  13. The key to the jail is over 200 less federal detainees than 5 years ago, same number of jailers, many, many more supervisors and overtime budget worse than ever.

This equals massive overheads and complete mismanagement.

  14. It has been brought to my attention that comments have been made on this blog that DO NOT
    Belong to me.

My name is being used by an obviously very disturbed person.

I would never make ANY comment that would be supportive of Nygren or Zinke.

    Thank you.

    The real,

    David Bachmann

  15. So, how do we know that the real Dave Bachman made the 11:56pm post above.

It could be the fake Dave Bachman trying to fool us by claiming to be the real Dave Bachman.

No tales of conspiracy, murder for hire, illegal alidn trafficking, federal investigations or crime fighting in the 11:56pm post?

This post could not have been made by the real Dave Bachman.

Cleary an imposter penned the 11:56pm post to fool us.

This post is not worthy of Tin Foil Dave.

  16. Ummm…aren’t these deals reciprocal?

So if Cook County picked someone up on a McHenry County warrant we would be paying the same fee?

These things balance out over time.

Raise the rate and the serial complainers will whine that we are paying Cook County to much when they pick up someone for us.

  17. It’s from the real David Bachmann.

I sent him the other comment to verify it was him. The fake one has been removed.

  18. Is the confirmation of the “real” Dave Bachman from the real Cal Skinner?

Maybe, the Dave Bachman imposter is now posing as Cal Skinner to verify his identity as the real Dave Bachman.

I don’t know who to trust anymore.

Maybe, I am not the real Teacher155, but an imposter.

    Vote Prim for County Board!
