Harvard, IL –Steven Reick, the Republican candidate for the Illinois General Assembly in the 63rd District has denounced Speaker Michael Madigan’s proposal to institute a “Millionaire’s Tax”, consisting of a 3% surcharge on individuals with income over $1 million, with the revenue to be used exclusively for education on a “per pupil basis”.

“Michael Madigan is engaging in a clumsy attempt to play class-warfare politics with a bill that, if enacted, would do nothing but accelerate the outmigration of citizens from Illinois.

“Instead of raising taxes on our most productive citizens, we should be creating an environment which encourages high income individuals and businesses to move into the State, not leave it.”

Current District 63 Representative Jack Franks has indicated his willingness to allow Madigan’s proposal to be placed on the ballot while, according to a story in the Northwest Herald, “making clear he is unsure how he would vote on it.”

“Jack Franks’ says on his own website that he’s ‘never supported a tax or fee increase,’” Reick noted.

“He recently refused to answer the Illinois Family Institute’s survey question regarding his position on the progressive income tax.

“To now say that he’s ‘unsure’ as to how he’d vote for it tells me that he’s not as committed to holding the line on taxes as he says he is.

“The people of this District deserve a clear and unambiguous statement on how he would vote on this bill.”

Steve Reick Blasts Jack Franks on Millionaire’s Tax — 15 Comments

  1. Steve Reick is anti education.

This crusty old bag should look at the schools in his own town first, then tell me that Harvard doesn’t need more funding to attract more talented teachers.

Harvard’s schools are failing; we need measures to ensure that Steve’s underfunded schools succeed.

If that $ comes from the top, so be it.

We are ONE nation under God; Jesus would give the clothes off his back to help his neighbor; maybe Bruce Rauner can afford to give just one tailored shirt.

Those making over 1 million adjusted gross income can afford to pay 3% more for every dollar the make over 1 million.

    Pure and simple.

  2. Is “Watching” a product of Harvard Schools?

The problem in Harvard and elsewhere in Illinois is NOT caused by what the teachers get paid!

Pay them more and you will simply have more expensive “dumbed down” graduates.

Stop the idiotic dual language programs and simply teach in English!

Every time the Harvard teachers get a wage increase, test scores go down!!

Based on the D-50 web site, there were 2,413 students in 2013 at an expense of $27,172,052 which works out to $11,261 per student!!

  3. No problems with dual or triple language, but they need to start in grade school, not high school.

Both of the previous comments get a failing grade here.

Reick is correct, Franks tax hike is bad policy.

Every state that has passed this hike, has suffered.

NO to Madigan, NO to Franks, and YES TO REICK!

  4. How many of the Harvard “citizens” actually pay taxes?

How many get food stamps, housing, free breakfast and lunch at school, etc. ?

  5. Does Jack Franks know this class warfare of his is directly in opposition to 3 of the 10 Commandments?

This is not of God or of our Constitution.

    It is disobedience to both.

  6. Allen, “No problems with dual or triple language” I was not aware we lived in Switzerland.

I thought this was the U.S.A.

Of course, since our borders no longer exist, I am probably in error.

  7. Based on the published class size of 18.4, D-50 has 131 classrooms. Cost per classroom would be $207,420.

  8. We live in a global economy.

If you all want your kids to be factory workers and only know one language, that’s so your MO.

The founding fathers coukd speak many languages.

Jefferson and Franklin could speak French.

    Many read Latin.

John Huntsmman, a former Pres. Candidate speaks Chinese.

You all should aspire to broaden the minds of kids.

That means more $ for education in Harvard.

    That means higher taxes.

Joe Walsh spoke at MCC about not putting burdens on our kids; that includes not making them uncompetitive in a mulitilngual, global economy.

  9. If we weren’t paying for all the illegals we could afford to teach our kids multiple languages.

  10. Want your children to have endless job opportunities and be rich?

Teach them Spanish and Mandarin Chinese before they get to 4th grade.

This is the good old USA and that’s exactly why our kids should learn it.

Any successful business person would love to have mastered these languages as a youngster.

It’s MUCH harder as an adult!

  11. Allen and Watching: You both probably support dual citizenship also.

  12. Our school system needs to find a different major source of funding besides the income tax.

Why should a senior with no kids in school pay the same amount as a family of 12 with 8 kids in the public school system?

Income is no sign of wealth in fact the wealthiest people in our population have modest incomes, the truly wealthy pay little or no income taxes and will find a way to get around this tax.

That is the problem with Franks and Madigan same old solutions to a problem they helped create.

Let’s not stop the most productive persons in our state from making more income and/or moving to a more tax friendly state.

Let’s keep them here to provide jobs and opportunity for our young people.

Steve Recik is the right man to bring up alternative funding solutions for our public school system and has my full support.
