SPRINGFIELD, IL – State Senator Pamela Althoff (R-McHenry) issued the following statement following Governor Quinn’s Annual Budget Address in Springfield on March 26, 2014:

“Governor Quinn’s Budget Address today revealed yet again why I cannot support extending the 2011 income tax increase or implementing a new progressive income tax. His policies and five year plan will clearly continue the failed policies of the past and go back on promises he made to the people of Illinois. In his five years in office, Illinois has become the state with the worst credit rating in the country, the second highest unemployment rate in the country, and we have seen the largest tax increase in history – a tax increase that was promises to be temporary. The five year plan will do nothing to reverse that for the state.

Not only that, but at the end of February we learned of a scathing audit from the Auditor General regarding gross abuse, waste and fraud of taxpayer money by this administration. To trust them with even more money through a continuation of the 67 percent income tax increase or a progressive tax is a complete non-starter for me.

Today we learned that the Governor plans to keep to income tax increase permanent while neighboring states are enjoying budget surpluses and lower unemployment rates due to their fiscal policies. They’re even lowering their income tax rates and giving money back to their constituents. No wonder more people are moving out of Illinois than in.

It’s unacceptable to consider keeping with the status quo. The people of Illinois deserve better from their state government. They deserve to live in a state that does not misuse their money or enact policies that stifle job growth and employment. We need to push for a more fiscally responsible government with sensible policies that promote job creation.

I will continue to be actively vocal regarding the broken promises of this administration and the need to be more transparent and fiscally sound. It can be done, we just need to right leaders in place to do so.”

  1. That’s great, Pam.

    You are so right.

Now I am wondering why you would even think of raising taxes on McHenry County residents by giving even more money to MCCD? Which is it?

Tax relief for Illinois residents, but adding more taxes for our county?

    Or tax relief for all?

  2. “while neighboring states are enjoying budget surpluses” that’s because they actually have higher taxes than Illinois.

“No wonder more people are moving out of Illinois than in.”

False statement, We have a lower rate of people moving in, but if you look at the trend around the US, it’s not so much a state trend as it is a regional trend.

More people are moving south from the midwest (my guess, look at our weather).
