McSweeney Property Tax Relief Passes House

SPRINGFIELD – Property tax relief legislation sponsored by State Rep. David McSweeney (R-Barrington Hills) advanced today through the Illinois House, giving property taxpayers hope of some relief on their future tax bills.

The bill passed on a 66-43 roll call. [60 votes is required for passage.]

“I’m pleased this legislation advanced through the House today in an effort to address the outrageous increases in property tax bills across Illinois,” stated McSweeney.

“As I’ve noted before, with over 7,000 different taxing bodies in Illinois, property taxes continue to be one of the largest complaints of people in my area.”

House Bill 5311 would institute a one-year freeze on township general fund tax levies in townships which have populations of less than 100,000 and are in areas subject to the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law, such as Cook, Kane, Lake and McHenry Counties.

“With Democrats focused on raising income taxes, every bit of tax relief we can provide is crucial,” he added.  “There’s a repeated assault happening on the Illinois taxpayer.  We’re fighting this war on all fronts, and these victories are rare, but imperative.”

The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration.

  1. Another ‘smoke screen” bill.

It will reduce overall tax bills minimally and penalizes townships that have been reducing their tax levies while rewarding those who have been increasing their tax levies.

In other words this is more of the “what time does the movie start?”

    legislation!

  2. So Cal, when State Rep. David McSweeney called you to promote this, did he mention that it will “save” the taxpayers between $1.50-$3.00 each on next year’s tax bill?

    No?

Did he mention that on the same day the House pass an unfunded mandate that will cost the same taxpayer over $100.00 next year? No?

So how does it feel to get played by a millionaire..?
