Another Sheriff’s Merit Commission Meeting Cancelled

Meriti Com meeting cancelled 5-8-14I’m not sure this is news.

If a McHenry County Sheriff’s Merit Commission meeting is held, that would probably be news.

With a new Sheriff coming to town, it might worth contemplating what role a Merit Commission wholly appointed by incumbent Keith Nygren might play in a new administration.

While its members are confirmed by the County Board, I can’t remember one who was not rubber stamped.

  1. When you look at the individual appointments to the Merit Commission, you can get an idea of why they were selected.

Too bad, some good people willing to be used.

The fact that the Commission rarely meets seems to say the Commission isn’t essential to the operation of the office.

Is a Merit Commission required by State Statutes?

  2. Sounds like hurry hurry and make changes before the new Sheriff comes in.

Maybe they are cancelling it to make their plans. Can’t anyone wait a few months?

Can’t think of anything that would be that imperative to change or vote on.

  3. or maybe they are cancelling the meeting to do just that.

waiting for the new Sheriff, Bill Prim

  4. Merit Commission IS required by state statute.

Their purpose is to provide and maintain a list of people eligible to be hired.

They also conduct promotional exams but… there is no statutory requirement to rank the individuals (think Pass/Fail).

They also handle discipline matters referred to them but, AFAIK, have no power to initiate such action on their own.

Therefore, if there is a hiring and promotional list that is unexpired and there are no discipline cases currently before them, why meet?

If they were meeting for coffee and lunch and nothing to discuss or do, we could complain about that too.
