Japan’s Surrender on the USS Missouri

Yesterday’s story on World War II Veterans in the war against Japan, prompted an email on a McHenry County attorney named James Overton Brooks.

Here’s the information:

One of the Naval officers on the Missouri for the surrender was James Overton Brooks.

He is buried in the [Nunda Township] cemetery, Crystal Springs Rd and Walkup.

He was MacArthur’s personal interpreter.

The Japanese surrender was a big deal for McHenry County. Until relatively recently, Woodstock held an annual VJ Day Parade. Click to enlarge any photo.

After the war he built a home on a bluff on Bull Valley Road and lived there the remainder of his life.

He was a lawyer downtown who did very well representing all of the big Japanese businesses doing business in the US.

He had a daughter, CLCHS class of ’58 and a son class of ’59.
