On the McHenry County Democratic Party’s web site appears the following plea for people to gather signatures for Joel Mains to run for State Representative against Republican Barb Wheeler.
Petition for Joel Mains
We have recruited a great Democratic opponent to face off against State Representative Barb Wheeler.
His name is Joel Mains.
He’s a fire fighter and EMT with a passion for serving the community.
He can beat Wheeler, but first he has to get on the ballot.
To do that he needs signatures in a hurry.
That’s where you come in.
If you can spare a few hours this week, please download the petition and get signatures for Joel. Signatures must be from voters who live in the 64th state legislative district, which includes Grafton Precincts 2, 3, 5, part of 7 and part of 11, Dorr Precincts 11, part of 12, part of 13, and 14, Richmond Precincts part of 1 and 4, Burton Township, McHenry Precincts 9, 11, part of 15, part of 22, part of 24, 25, 27, part of 28, part of 30, and 34, Nunda Precincts part of 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, part of 12, 13, part of 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, part of 22, 24, 27 and 29, Algonquin Precincts part of 2, 7, part of 10, and 19.
If you need to verify that the neighborhood you want to canvass is in the district, check VoteBuilder or call the party at 847-906-1559.
The deadline for submitting petitions is June 2, so it’s really critical we get out and help Joel immediately. If you can spare an hour or two, that will be a huge help.

Mains is mentioned in the August 24, 2012, Downers Grove Patch with reference to the Pink Heals Tour as follows:
“Joel Mains, a [firefighter?] and cancer activist, has been involved with the Pink Heals Tour for the past two years. He told the village council he is excited to finally have the trucks visit Downers Grove.
“‘It was the coolest thing I’ve ever done in my life, and I’d still say that today,’ Mains said of Pink Heals Tour.
“Mains said he is often reduced to tears at events as he witnesses the outpouring of love and support for women with cancer.
“‘I challenge any of you to walk around the vehicles and not be moved by some of the things written on there,’ he said. ‘… Cancer is something that has affected all of us.'”
His Linkedin account says he is President at Pink Heals Chicagoland.

Some may remember the attempt of a minority of McHenry County Republican Precinct Committeeman to get permission from its Central Committee to try to put Tonya Franklin on the ballot against Jack Franks two years ago.
The difference was that Franklin was only going to have one weekend to gather the signatures, while the Democrats have apparently given their candidate ten days.
Dissatisfaction with the unwillingness of those in control of the GOP at that time was one motivating factor to the change at this spring’s Republican Convention.
