Last year, the premier political event in McHenry County was probably the annual Pro-Life Pig Roast at Irene Napier’s farm.
All four gubernatorial candidates for the Republican nomination courted voters.
No one running for statewide office came this year, but there were two United States Congressmen, Peter Roskam and Randy Hultgren.
Roskam was first to the microphone.
He told the group that liberals want Pro-Lifers to think the battle is over.
The 16th District United States Representative assured the crowd that it wasn’t.
“Science is on our side,” he explained.
Roskam, who just lost a race for the number three leadership post in Congress, told me later than it was his first “regional” contest.
“If I had been from South of the Mason-Dixon line (the northern border of Maryland–my home state), I would have won.”
He said he told Southern colleagues that he was from the southern part of Wheaton, but that was not persuasive.
Roskam said that with his new-found free time he would concentrate on his assignments on the Ways and Means Committee and the one investigating the attach on the United States Embassy in Benghazi, Libya.
Later there was a reunion of sorts.
District 4 Republican McHenry County Board candidate Chuck Wheeler, who was a Village Trustee in DuPage County’s Glendale Heights and narrowly lost a bid for Village President, and Roskam greeted each other.
David McSweeney gave another incredibly energized speech.
He extolled the virtues of Bruce Rauner, the GOP candidate for Governor.
McSweeney urged support of Republicans so that the Democrats would not be able to raises taxes gain.
As usual he shook pretty much every hand in the crowd.
Steven Reick extolled the values of families.
“We need to bring back the culture of family,” he said.
He was accompanied by his campaign manager, Jim Minardi.
Congressman Randy Hultgren came about mid-party with his wife and a son.
He spoke to the crowd, plus greeted many individually.
McHenry County State’s Attorney Lou Bianchi was in attendance with his wife.
Republican candidate for Sheriff Bill Prim greeted people.
There was even a judicial candidate from Cook County.
John Curry narrowly won the Republican Primary Election in March in the 13th Judicial Subcircuit.
He is running unopposed this fall.
County Board members Nick Provenzano and John Hammerand were also at the affair. Hammerand is up for re-election. He was accompanied by his wife Cheryl, who is a Wonder Lake Fire Protection District Trustee.
Two newcomers were present.
Besides Chuck Wheeler, District 1’s Andrew Gasser was there.
Great to see Bill Prim at the event as I knew he would be there.
Cal I think you missed taking pictures of Jim Harrison.
Oh wait, sorry,I forgot.Harrison says he is neither Republican or Democratic so I figured he would be there to support a wonderful cause.
Oh again, silly me, he is a Democrat.
He has gone and supported the Democratic events and has stated himself to give money and support to the Democratic party.
I don’t understand all the independent stuff. l.o.l.but vote for Bill Prim as he knows what he is and believes what he stands for.
voter, good comment . . . I hope Cal posts all the pictures on who was there.
Great group of people, but then there are those that slip in.
You mean that goof was there.
Unbelievable if he was.
He’s still a Democrat and a phony as far as I am concerned.
Wait.
I didn’t see him there.
If I did I would have puked up my piglets.
