Oakwood Hills Gas-Fired Generating Plant Developer Notifies Local Officials

The Oakwood Hills Energy Center developers mailed letters to local officials on July 1st about its proposal to build a 430-megawatt electric generating facility behind the Oakwood Hills Village Hall.

It is being promoted as a backup for windmills when the wind is blowing enough.

An open house at the Crystal Lake Holiday Inn on Tuesday, July 22nd from 4-7 will have people who can answer questions.

Below is one sent to the Village Administrator of neighboring Prairie Grove:

  1. The Elgin Energy Center at 1559 Gifford Road in Elgin is a natural gas power generating station.

Another is the Kendall County Generation facility at 1401 County Line Road in Minooka.

Since the letter mentioned no risks associated with the project I did a Google search on “risks of natural gas power generating plant” which resulted in some good questions one could ask at the Tuesday July 22nd meeting.

  2. Water use, noise, high power lines, no creation of locally usable energy, economic inducement to run in excess of zoned allowable hours.

    Especially water use.

  3. I have seen preliminary estimates of between 1.5 and 3 million gallons of water per day, primarily for cooling.

How much is fresh and how much is re-used is not clear.

This area has many homes on well & septic.

This kind of water usage would most likely necessitate access to a deep aquifer.

Consistent drawdown over several years could have devastating effects on the regional water supply.

I agree with Susan that water use is a key consideration in the siting of this plant, and its effects reach far beyond the boundaries of the Village of Oakwood Hills.

  4. This power plant is bad news for the area and our water supply!

    Who gains?

    Not area residents!

    Maybe area politicians?

  5. This kind of progress we don’t need.

How did I miss this proposal?

I would vote no, and ask if any of your “experts” reside in Oakwood Hills?
