Back in 1999, the Chicago Tribune wanted to buy the Northwest Herald for $120 million.

Shaw Media decided not to sell.

That’s according to a suit filed by Bob and William Shaw that resulted in their getting a buyout of $5.25 million.

In 2009, a valuation expert set the value of Shaw Media at $25 million.

Now, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that once the Chicago Tribune and other papers are spun off into a new entity in August, it “sees opportunity in snapping up smaller papers near its bigger, established papers.”

NWH Masthead 7-29-14When I read that this morning, I thought of the previous Tribune attempt to purchase the NWH.

I pass it on for your consideration.

Could Tribune Come after Northwest Herald Again? — 11 Comments

  1. I can’t imagine the Northwest Herald is worth much.

The businesses is operated by people who refuse to believe that print publishing is dying, and rather than embracing the future by providing content online, they instead have pay-walled the site in a misguided attempt to bolster print readership.

  2. so does the Tribune, even if you pay for home delivery they still charge you for digital subscription, and Daily Herald has been charging for at least the past year

  3. How does the Tribune, a failed newspaper which has filed for bankruptcy many times, have the money to buy anything?

The Wall Street Journal is doing well because it reports the news.

All other newspapers are liberal and they’re losing money.

How can one liberal newspaper “buy” another.

    Do they expect different results?

They all rely on the liberal AP and Reuters anyways.

What a laugh – liberals live in a dream world and they wonder why they’re failing over and over and over….

  4. Yes! The people from the Chicago Tribune buy em out and run Kevin Lyons and Company out of town.

Gosh, I was really looking forward to that non violent protest in support of shutting down the Northwest Herald…

Those articles promoting the false accusations against Lou Bianchi were shameful.

What happened to that cushy office Kevin had at the courthouse, is it still there?

    Very impressive Kevin…

  5. The NWH is become a big disappointment.

They can dress it up in a fancy website, but it is no longer what it used to be.

  6. Murdoch doesn’t own the Tribune.

Charging for online access is the industry standard.

You can’t find hyper local coverage anywhere else, and the price point is fair.

Exactly how does the AP cover McHenry County board?

The issue is they need more staff to cover the areas more fully.
