New County Zoning Threatens Home Recreational Vehicle Storage

Camper and boat could not be stored in the driveway of this unincorporated Crystal Lake home under the proposed County zoning ordinance.

McHenry County Board members are working their way through the proposed Unified Development Ordinance, known as “UDO” by anyone talking about it.

The owner of these jet skis would have to store them somewhere else during the winter.

Wonder Lake member John Hammerand found something he doesn’t like at all on page 242.

How about this location for storing a camper? Would it pass muster of the proposed UDO?

The topic is recreational vehicles.  RV’s for short.

This page of the proposed county zoning ordinance concerns the storage of commercial and recreational vehicles at one's home.

Here is Hammerand’s commentary on the provisions:

Ridiculous provision in UDO makes it impossible to park Boats and RV’s on your driveway.

Beware, Boaters and Campers!

The new UDO forbids you from parking your Boat or RV in your driveway for more than 30 days. You will have to sacrifice the way you use your yard now.

You are going to have to build a pad in the rear of your house to park it.

Do you even have access to your back yard?

Will your set back and septic field allow it?

I hope you take the time and call your County Board Member regarding the taking of the use of your land.

I will be voting against.it.

The storage of commercial vehicles is also restricted by the proposed zoning change.

Could this commercial trailer be parked in front of its owner's unincorporated home at night and on weekends?

  1. Maybe I disagreed with John on pot, but UDO sounds like a nightmare.

“It will be of little avail to the people that the laws are made by men of their own choice if the laws be so voluminous that they cannot be read, or so incoherent that they cannot be understood; if they be repealed or revised before they are promulgated, or undergo such incessant changes that no man who knows what the law is today can guess what it will be tomorrow. Law is defined to be a rule of action; but how can that be a rule which is little known, and less fixed?” -James Madison

  2. Why is this any of the county’s business?

I am horrified that they think they can get away with this type of BS ordinance.

  3. This is what happens when you elect attorneys to office in addition to electing people who do NOT live in unincorporated areas.

Only members of the Board who live in unincorporated McHenry should be voting on the UDO.

    All others should recuse themselves!!!

  4. Now that remark about attorneys being responsible is pretty dumb.

I think the 13 women are to blame, not the 2 attorneys!

Or, maybe it’s the 12 men that don’t like RVs

  5. This is why many people choose to live in unincorporated areas.

This is short sited at best.

  6. What kind of BS is this?

Now they want a county wide HOA?

None if their damn business what I store or park on MY property!

    As Walter says,” dumasses”!!

  7. This will be just one more reason people will flee McHenry County.

It is already impossible to live and work here for many folks, creating this is just going to be the nail in the coffin.

  8. I wish this proposal applied to the City Of Crystal Lake.

  9. Crystal Lake does have rules.

I wish they would enforce them.

Just because there is a lake here people feel that boats and motor homes are a needed part of the community.

  10. Sorry folks but

if I want to see a boat ….I’ll go to a marina

if I want to see a camper I’ll go to a campground

if I want to see a snowmobile I’ll wait until winter

and why do people think a camper is a home addition with a grill as a kitchen next to their house?

I sure hope they pass this ordinance so some people can actually look
out their windows and not see all this >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

  11. Now don’t write back and say you have rights because I have a right not
to want to see all this

  12. They are a part of the community!

You people that would like to see this law that takes away home and land owner’s rights should go back to living in your apartments in Chicago.

Anyone wonder why all the driveways in Coventry in Crystal Lake have that little extra apron piece on the side (not in front of the garage)?

The houses were built with driveways specifically for storing your boat and or camper.

The nerve of you yahoos from the city that think you can legislate the burbs into a little city!

  13. And what if I don’t want to see your ugly puss staring at my driveway?

Do I have the right to enact a law that applies to that?

Your circular thinking is showing again. (Which is why your brain told you to stop and put another post under your original. Didn’t work now, did it? Even your brain knew you were wrong.)

  14. and there you are again only thinking of yourself. and your rights stop when they infringe on mine.

so one can say the same thing back and forth.

You are the childish one not me.

If you don’t agree with me that is fine but I have the rights, you always talk about,to say what I think.

I didn’t know you lived in Bull Valley

  15. I agree with you VOTER and they can store all of their toys where it doesn’t affect the quality of the neighborhood.

A guy down the street from me has stored his boat in his driveway for at least 14 years and never moved it.

    It looks bad.

Do his neighbors have any rights….

I guess not because they keep moving away, and the city of CL does nothing about that violation!

I can provide that address if anyone wants to see this beauty up front and personal.

  16. I think that may be why they want the ordinance.

I agree with you when you say that they can keep their toys where if doesn’t ruin the quality of the neighborhood.

At least they could have considerations for others by storing things in their backyard but then again if you sit in your backyard you would have to see it. So that would not work.

Do you know that it can actually bring down the value of your home and property.

The ordinance will clean up the neighborhoods and that is a good thing.

I’m sure if you look you can find another ordinance that would cover getting rid of that boat.

  17. Those interested in the issue should call their four county board members.

  18. I have the right to park my rv in my own driveway.

I shouldn’t have to pay to keep it elsewhere.

Especially since rates will be raised if we are all forced to keep it in storage.

Also my husband makes his living with his work vehicle and should be able to bring it home with him.

Especially when it feeds his family.

  19. I totally disagree with the scope of this proposal.

I am totally offended that the county board has nothing better to do than try to regulate what goes on with my property.

If your pasttime or employment situation requires your parking an Rv, boat or work vehicle on your land, be free to do so without regulation.

If your vehicle is currently licensed, be free to do so without regulation.

If you feel the urge to enact ordinances, might I suggest the plethora of unlicensed motor vehicles/junk cars that are way more of an eyesore than someones camper or boat

  20. I don’t want to drive down my street and see it looking like Sanford & Son.Work vehicles aren’t an issue.

Park your boat/trailer/camper on the side or back yard.

I don’t think thats much to ask without violating your rights..use common sense/courtesy :0)

  21. Some of the lot approved by prior county boards are pretty narrow.

  22. Jeff, you are so right on the money!

Frankly, I am a little tired of all the jealous people on here that can’t afford a boat/trailer/RV that are doing all the whining and complaining.

“I don’t have any of that stuff so I don’t want to see it on your property, eww.”

Could the whiners be any more transparent?

  23. So what is the law now for mchenry home owners?

    1 rec trailer outside or……

  24. None of your business if I store a boat or trailer on my property as long as it is maintained and not just junk.

Dont like seeing it then move or look the other way.
