“Illinois has the best workforce in the world, but we have to keep improving to maintain our edge,” McSweeney said.

“This legislation will make it easier for students in our community colleges to get the training they need in order to hit the ground running as soon as they graduate.”

McSweeney’s legislation encourages each community college in the state to voluntarily set up a job training partnership with local manufacturing companies.

This board will make recommendations on how to best mingle the college’s education programs with the needs of local manufacturing employers. The end result will be to produce graduates with the job skills necessary for local employment.

“We should be doing everything we can to give our students the training and education they need to find jobs once they graduate,” McSweeney said. “This bill helps us work toward that goal.”

The legislation is House Bill 4910.

  1. We need to move away from the 19th Century model of education that prepared kids for the Industrial Age and into an education system that prepares them for the workforce of the future.

Dave’s bill is a good step in both giving young people the type of education that will ready them for the 21st Century workforce and helping companies find skilled labor.

Southwire Company in Carrolton, Georgia has partnered with the Carroll County schools to create a program called “12 for Life”, (http://www.12forlife.com) where at-risk high school kids work several hours a week at Southwire and then attend school on the company’s site.

They combine the traditional elements of education with the lessons learned on the shop floor.

These types of innovative partnerships can encourage kids to stay in school while giving them a first step on the ladder of employment.

Let’s start thinking about how today’s economy works and how young people learn today as opposed to how they were taught in the past.

  2. Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and other billionaires keep pushing for more visas for non-citizens to do jobs they claim Americans won’t do.

They, along with the Democrats and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce keep pushing for OPEN BORDERS!

    Why?

Simple: CHEAP LABOR BOTH IN THE LOWEST PAYING SECTORS OF OUR ECONOMY AND THE TECH SECTOR!!!

Forget about increasing the minimum wage, shut the borders, close down H1-B and other work visas until wages are increased to attract U.S. legal residents.

  3. MCC now offers a plastics engineering program.

Students can learn about, injection molding, blow molding, and more.

Silgan is just one of the premier plastics companies, with a division in Woodstock Illinois.

  4. McSweeny reminds me of an English Tory who thinks the country can somehow go back to bein’ good again, like some 1950s ‘Leave it to Beaver’ America.

He’s rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

    Demographics are Destiny!
