Dick Durbin Gets a Crystal Lake Photo Op

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin came to Crystal Lake Thursday.

Jim Oberweis yard signs lined Route 14 near McHenry County College.

As I drove to his McHenry County College appearance, I saw Oberweis yard signs along Route 14.

Ostensibly, Durbin was here to tour the next robotics lab at McHenry County College.

Jack Franks, having maneuvered himself into camera range listened along with Dick Durbin to a student after a demonstration of a computer driven machine.

The real reason was to get his photo on the front page of the Northwest Herald and a story on Star105 FM radio.

Undoubtedly the radio story by Stew Cohen is already running.

The NW Herald story and picture will show up tomorrow.

Durbin is engaged in a closer race than he thought possible with State Senator Jim Oberweis, who will speak at McHenry County Republican Headquarters in the Crystal Lake Plaza next Wednesday night at 6:30.

The margin is in single digits with the second most powerful man in the U.S. Senate in the lead.

National money providers have not yet decided on whether to try to take Durbin out.

MCC Dean Jim Falco told the reason for the new robotics program:

  1. Nobody’s in the pipeline for manufacturing jobs.
  2. There is an aging workforce.
  3. Young people do not have the training.
Dick Durbin spoke to about thirty people in the MCC robotics lab.

Durbin spoke, telling of a Kraft plant in Champaign with starting pay at $50,000 with no degree needed, just the ability to run the food processing machines.

McHenry County Board member Diane Evertsen and her husband Ev were outside along with McHenry Township Republican Party Chairman Steve Rooney.

When a few demonstrators set up shop near the closest door to the lab, college officials snuck him in another entrance.

And placed an MCC policeman right inside that door.

I didn’t stick around to see if Durbin would have the courage to confront them.

I’m betting not.

  1. No, he exited out of the auto garage door (you know, where all the dumpsters are) and got in the car with Jack Franks.

Diane was near the entrance to the robotics lab.

I highly doubt they would have driven up to people carrying Reick and Oberweis signage.

    Ha ha ha.

  2. I’m proud of Ev and Diane and Steve Rooney!!

    Way to go!

Wish I could have been there with you!

  3. It was a meeting supporting the Parents Television Council and their initiative to stop sexualization of girls called 4 Every Girl.

There were only about 30 guests, so we were able to speak frankly in a friendly atmosphere.

  4. Where do you read this is a tough race?

No credible resource I can find even has this as a competitive race.

  5. **As I drove to his McHenry County College appearance, I saw Oberweis yard signs along Route 14.**

    Aren’t those signs illegally placed?

I bet you would have mentioned that if they were Durbin signs, or signs for any candidate you don’t support.

  6. Nice Job my Friends Dump Durbin 2014.

32ears in Washington Is way to long for anyone.

  7. I’m pretty sure it was in the New York Times. The article is in some pile around the house.

  8. Hey inish just so you have your facts the Republican bashing Paper the New York Times Had it at 39 Durbin 36 Oberweis 5 weeks ago.

If it was not A tight Race Durbin would still be in Washington selling us out and lining his Pockets.

  9. Even the headline says he has an 8 point lead.

A 3 point lead in one category.

You may not like Durbin but if you think having Oberwies in office is going to be better for Illinois, you are sorely mistaken.

  10. Inish:

Oberweis in D.C. would help to Dump Reid just like Reick in Springfield would help to Dump Madigan!!

Unfortunately this year it is not possible to Dump Madigan due to a lack of GOP candidates but we could take away his super majority!!

    Dumping Durbin is very possible.

It all depends on who comes out to vote and whether or not the Dem attempt to create mass confusion during this election with their ‘temporary’ election law changes is adequate to screw up the count.

This State could have an Al Frankin fiasco.

  11. Nice sign Diane.

It states what needs to be done and will be done.
